If you come into this expecting it to be like the main manga, Vampire Reign, then you are wrong. It's a lot more different.
As someone who didn't even like the OG manga, this one is even worse. At least Vampire Reign had some positive points to it, Guren Catastrophe has no redeeming qualities to it.
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS"
Setting:
The takes place in ordinary Japan. What made Vampire Reign interesting was the postapocalyptic setting, but in this manga that has not happened yet. So, most of the action is in a high school setting. Guren Catastrophe at 16 doesn't have the dreary and depressing vibe that
...
Vampire Reign has.
Characters:
In Vampire Reign there were a lot of interesting characters but in Catastrophe at 16 there are only two. Saito and Shinya. Everyone else is disappointing.
Guren: In this manga he's a Gary Stu. He's so special and so strong and amazing. The manga just repeats how different he is from the rest of society. Also he wants to get stronger to protect his comrades and his mentally ill girlfriend (we'll get to her later). And that's it. If you're reading this manga with the expectation of seeing the Guren in Vampire Reign, you're wrong. You might as well consider them to be different people. This Guren's a joke.
The female characters except for Mahiru: The only thing the female characters exist for are to be fan service, fawn over Guren, and to be nearly r#ped. That's it. There's nothing else to them. They add nothing else to the plot. I would talk more about them but there's nothing else to say about them.
Mahiru: Like Guren, the manga keeps reminding the readers how beautiful, perfect, special, and different she is from the rest of society. Like the female characters she also fawns over Guren. BUT she is very mentally ill, her love is really just her own mental health issues she's projecting onto Guren. She's crazy and that makes her slightly more interesting than the other female characters but not by much.
Saito: He's the only one reminding us there's an actual plot to this story. Without him, this manga would be so boring. As a character he's not really developed, but he is the walking plot device of the story.
Shinya: The only one who gets any development. His backstory is pretty tragic and all the most emotional scenes involve him. Any time Guren acts like an actual characters rather than a Gary Stu it's usual thanks to Shinya. If Shinya was the main character instead of Guren this manga would be way better.
The story:
You remember how most ONS fans thought the Second Shibuya High School Arc was so f*cking boring and were glad it finished in like three chapters? Well imagine if that arc didn't end. Imagine if it just went on and on for like 40+ chapters. That is the plot of Guren Catastrophe at 16. That's why this manga sucks. It's boring. And to make up for it, it's more violent than Vampire Reign. Of course, the violence doesn't really add anything besides shock value.
Only the last 5 chapters are actually interesting everything else is so boring.
TLDR: Guren Catastrophe at 16 is a mess. It's boring, it's purposelessly violent, it's got over the top fanservice, and the characters suck.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS"
One of the most disappointing manga ever. Let me just start off the actual parts I liked about it.
It has good art.
The lore is the best part of the story and yet it is executed so poorly. The story incorporates Christianity and traditional Japanese mythology. If the story, dialogue, and characters were even half decent, this would be a 7/10 manga just because of the lore.
The vampire and demon characters all great backstories, entertaining personalities, and interesting scenes.
...
The stuff I hated was everything else
Pacing is extremely slooooooooow.
80% of the characters suck.
Out of the 7 main characters only 4 are important to the story, the rest are for the most part treated as background characters.
Kimizuki, Mitsuba, and Yoichi barely have any purpose to the plot.
Kimizuki and Yoichi sometimes are important to the story but they don't get any development.
Mitsuba if she is lucky might have a single line in any chapter otherwise she's fanservice.
Shinoa out of the Squad was the most disappointing, because she went from a smug but weak person who wanted to become a better leader to protect her comrades to a LITERAL SIMP. Forget all her motivations be a better leader, forget her smug personality, by chapter 114 all that's left of her is "I love yu san". Oh and one more thing, the manga feels the need to remind us of how "talented and smart she is" every ten or so chapters. Not her saying this by the way, it's OTHER characters saying this. Sometimes she's even dumber than Yu.
Yu is an idiot. Sweet Jesus I've never seen this dumb of a protagonist. He was an Eren edgelord in the first 40 chapter but then he went full toddler moron after that. He shoots himself in the foot every single chapter and when he suffers the consequences of his dumbass actions, he makes the same mistakes. AGAIN AND AGAIN. The manga tries to argue that his childish behavior and his stupidity are a coping mechanism and that "he's actually a smart guy" but like where the hell do we actually see him doing anything smart? Again with the author saying that characters are something but not demonstrating they are that.
Mika is a character I have mixed feelings about. On one hand I don't dislike him as much as I dislike Shinoa Squad. But on the other hand there's nothing interesting about him. He's the only one out of the children characters who's not a fucking idiot BUT 99% of his lines are "I must protect Yu chan". He's got no other personality besides obsessing over Yu. He seems to have a really interesting backstory but the author won't get to the point thanks to bad pacing. He does say the things that we the audience feel like how much of a shady guy Guren is. But despite being the smart one, there's nothing else to him.
Guren was the only one out of the main characters that I liked. He's a hero who's actually a villain character. Him being a shady character who does bad things makes him an interesting characters. I like villain like characters like Guren. However, the recent chapters all he does is cry and talk about how everything is his fault so that's why everyone should go along with his plans. The author made him unbearable in the recent arc.
The plot moves very slowly and each chapter when it seems like the truth is going to be revealed, nothing ends up being revealed.
Also the word family appears in every single chapter.
The manga's concept of family honestly makes me glad I don't speak to mine anymore.
Aside from the non human characters, the art, and the lore, there's nothing good about this manga. It's trash belonging in the trash can.

Ehh it's ok I guess, the art's pretty good and the characters really are interesting. When reading this Manga you end up feeling so sorry for the main guy. But it was ok.
.
SPOILER WARNINg
So the main guy has a pretty good life in the beginning he's got a beautiful wife and daughter. Lives in a comfortable home and just got a job as a teacher. He starts his job and tries to get to know all the kids and he see that the main girl is kinda quiet and lonely. So he thinks "hey why not get to know her a little better" because
...
he wants to get along with all the kids in his class.
The main girl mistakes the main guy's kindness as love and starts to harassing him. She tries to kill her best friend because the best friend was getting too close to, attacks the wife, kidnaps the daughter, and a bunch of other crazy stuff.
This girl is really crazy. She knows she's attractive so she tries to use her looks to get with the guy. He resists almost all her advances because he's a teacher and married. (except this one time he got drunk at her place during a party and the two made out) She's got secret photos of him, sniffs his clothes, basically a psycho.
So the guy is obviously aware of her feelings and tries to push her away but she thinks all the mean stuff he says is just another "trial of love" or whatever. Tough times for the main guy you know? I was kinda expecting that she would kidnap and assault the guy but that didn't happen thankfully.
Those who want to read it, know that there is some nudity and sexually provocative moments (but not in a hot way, in a "Oh that's nasty" way, unless you like weird stuff which this may not bother you)

Art: The art style for Vampire Knight is indeed beautiful and original for all the characters appearances fit their personalities. The backgrounds are drawn very well and nothing seems out of place. Especially, since this anime was made in 2008 which was a time when anime was still in its " experimental stage". I would have given this anime a 10/10 in art but the hairstyles bothered me since many of the characters looked like they never bothered to cut or brushed their hairs in years so I'll go with 9/10.
Sound: The sound work for this anime was without of doubt excellent in this
...
anime. The soundtrack fit every scene perfectly and the sub and dub work was fantastic as well. All the voice actors for Vampire knight with the exception of Yuki Cross was well executed. Yuki's English voice actor sounded honestly mediocre and for some reason had a hard time pronouncing Kaname Kuran's first name right. Other than that I thoroughly enjoyed the voice work for this anime Japanese & English that is. 10/10
Characters: The main character Yuki Cross can be described in one word by everyone who watch this show. " Pathetic". She spends most of her time crying about not being able to help Zero and lets her get into some kind of danger only for Zero and Kaname to save her ass. She can't do anything on her own and when confronted with a problem she runs away from it. She's a bland and forgettable as the main female lead. Kaname was a creepy stalker who had the hots for his own ( spoiler )..... ugh just thinking about it grosses me out. Zero was the only normal and decent one out of the three main characters. His love for Yuki was explained well and reasonable unlike Kaname and on top of that he is actually strong and dependable. Kaname has bad vibes coming from him just by looking at him. The side characters were interesting since they were actually developed. Hanabusa's reason for worshiping Kaname is pretty passionate and Kaien Cross' love for his children was very strong and you could actually feel the bond between him and his family. I could mention other characters but this section is getting way too long. 6/10
Story: I fell asleep while watching this anime which rarely happens even if I am watching an anime at 3:00 am because I'd still be awake but this anime actually bored me to sleep. The plot was dull and forgettable simple as that. This anime is short so it shouldn't have any filer episodes but there were way too many filer episodes. Far too many sexually provocative blood draining scenes that was time consuming ( I mean there's like seven scenes in the anime where Zero keeps drinks Yuki's blood it's too many and takes up way too much time.) This anime also has incestuous elements to it which is a major instant turn off. I'd rather watch the last few episodes of Death Note than this snore fest. I'm not gonna include shit from the manga because news flash this isn't the manga.
Enjoyment: This anime wasn't awful but it's nothing that I'd watch twice. I guess since It was really boring I didn't really understand half of it. But if the plot was decent, with the art style and music as well as the dub work this anime could have been a masterpiece. But sadly, the plot and characters just dragged it down. 4/10
Overall: If you're interesting kinky romance sucking blood and hot guys shit like that or just have a lot of free time this is the anime for you. But for those who are looking an interesting anime about vampires here's a list of decent vampire animes:
1 Hellsing/Ultimate ( Violence and War )
2 Shiki ( Survival )
3 Seraph of the End ( Friendship/ Family and War )
4 Blood Lad ( This shits hilarious )
5 Jojo's Bizarre adventure ( violence and profanity)
6 Trinity Blood ( Masterpiece)
7 Servamp ( In case you're into hot guys and fights because it was actually pretty good )
8 Blood C (epic Fightsssssss )
9 Bakemonogartari series ( This is so bad that its good )
10 Vampire Hunter D ( very short but interesting)
Vampire animes to avoid: Diabolik lovers because that shit will make you die and come back to life just to commit suicide again
Itsuka Tenma no Kuro Usagi: I can't describe how cringy and awful this anime is
