I have to say that this is usually my favorite type of anime and I went into this really wanting to love it. I really did.
The side characters in this are amazing, particularly the characterization of the main character's parents. They were beautifully complex and human. The main character, on the other hand, I just didn't find interesting at all. He's a jerk. He changes slightly at the end, but doesn't resolve things with all the characters. The main character he treated like shit the whole movie, his poor mother, he never resolved things with. I was left feeling very unsatisfied because I was
...
expecting him forgiving his mother to be the most emotional reunion. This never happens. In fact, the only characters he resolves things with are his friends, the girl he had a crush on, the weird girl, and his guy friend. It never shows him getting along with anyone in his family at all. It's not resolved. The closest it comes to it is when he cries at the dinner table because he doesn't want to leave his only friend. That's it.

This is a masterpiece. Every single bit of it. Easily my favorite anime of all time and the first one I recommend to people. They are always hooked when I explain the beginning of the plot, which I feel like isn't explained well enough in the summary page (but for good reason, as it does give away the first few episodes). You really need to make it in about six episodes to fully understand what's going on and get hooked.
The characters are so beautifully drawn and complex. There are no two characters that look alike. You can gleam a lot about a character's personality
...
just by their face, eyes, stance, and expression. How many other animes can you say that about? Very careful and precise care was taken designing these characters. You can even tell what beautiful characters have ugly or cold souls just by looking at the way their eyes are drawn. The attention to detail is the best I've ever seen in any anime. None of that "every character looks the same except for the hair."
The plot is complex and compelling. The mystery gets darker and more complex the further it goes. The protagonist gets more and more jaded as the story goes on. His appearance changes subtly. The clothes he wears, his facial hair, his eyes, his hair, everything. He starts out so innocent and nice and he slowly changes to the point where if you put the picture of before and after next to each other, they look like different people. It is subtle, but incredible that the creator managed to do that.
If you're a fan of dark, serious animes, this is for you. It uses no cheap tricks to terrify you. Gore is pretty minimal. It's mostly psychological and I think that is so much scarier.

This is a masterpiece. It is truly unbelievable what the author has managed to do with so very little. Hell, the first volume takes place nearly entirely in the same location and you don't care. The story is THAT compelling. If you are looking for a good story, one that gives you something that makes you want to keep reading, read this.
It has plot twists like no other story I've ever read. Plot twists that you don't see coming, but make sense. They make such perfect sense you can't believe you didn't realize it yourself.
I would only start if you have time to spare
...
because you will be hooked.
The author has it as a free .pdf file on their website, which confused me at first. It's also in a different format than any other story I've read. Don't let this deter you. The description doesn't give this story justice. You will love it.

This manga was definitely not the best I've read, but it still had some elements that made it stand out. The characters are deep and complex. Their characters and personalities grow as the story progresses. You see them grow and change. You see them through triumphs and failures. You find out who is good at heart and who is not. The plot is compelling. In these regards, it is very good.
The stories dark aspects are a strong point but also a weakness. It will definitely shock you, but I think some of it is overdone. The amount of rape that goes on in is
...
over the top. It seems like the female characters always end up naked or in see through clothing, with someone either about to rape them or being raped. Constantly. Every woman in the story has a perfect bubble butt and round tits. They have arched backs and even when laying down, perfect big globes. It seems at time like an erotica manga. I can tell you that real rape is horrifying and not nearly as erotic as the manga portrays, I think it would fit the story better if it displayed it as such. For example, *SPOILER* In the beginning when Gatt's gets raped, it is displayed as scary, terrifying, the rapist is in shadows and looks like a nightmare. *SPOILER* This is the correct way I think, to write about a rape. Yet, every female who gets raped has arched backs, big tits, bubble butt, it's made to seem very erotic instead of terrifying.
