Finished my reread of Domestic Girlfriend. Overall, the series is a 5.5/10. The story has a solid cast of characters. The one main problem about the characters is that a lot of them are more interesting than the three main leads. Some of these “side stories” are really interesting to go through and occasionally has some emotional moments. The main characters don’t offer much to the table, but I was quite invested in the protagonist’s evolution as an author. On the other hand, I did not enjoy the romance story between Rui, Hina, and Natsuo at all. Since the story does go after high school,

and eventually into college, I could tell the author was trying a more mature take on a romance story. However, the three main characters still act like children, even Hina who is an adult. Even in the author’s previous work, “GE-Good Ending”, the characters acted more mature and that series took place in high school. Overall, the cast of characters were pretty solid, except for the leads. The plot, although easily bingeable, is nothing special. It pulls the reader in with the first chapter and relies on extreme situations to encourage the reader to continue. Although this is effective, it does not add to the themes that the story is trying to show. The plot also falls into many cliches found in the romance genre, such as damsel in distress. One thing that I enjoyed was Natsuo’s journey as an novelist. Through this narrative, the author is able to communicate with the reader about the themes in the story. I also hoped that some of the relationships in the series were given more time to develop. I won’t spoil the ending, but it was a massive disappointment for me. While the plot has potential, it unfortunately falls short. The art is no less than phenomenal. Some panels convey the emotions of the characters very well. The covers of the volumes are a joy to look at and the occasional spreads are also very well drawn.
