(SPOILERS HERE AND THERE)
Okayyyyy, so I just finished this anime this morning after bingeing it for like a good 4 hours. Here's my thoughts: I was kind of surprised to see such a high score on MAL for this show, as it feels pretty standard in terms of slice-of-life romance, except that it's way more ecchi, so it's also just a standard ecchi as well. The premise of the show left me quite interested, I mean you've never really seen a hina-doll-making mc before, plus making Kitagawa both gyaru (ish) and otaku could add some fun characterization. BUT, instead of providing the audience with something
...
different in these two character's dynamics as compared to your average romance-ecchi, it delves into the EXACT SAME CLICHES (AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH)
One minute I'll be seeing what's possibly a nice interaction between the two characters and then suddenly one of them's horny?? Or there's just a totally unecessary fanservice shot that doesn't contribute to the show in the slightestttttttt.
Like every episode, every few minutes or so; it's too much. I can definitely agree with other reviewers when they say it shouldn't be labeled as seinen and instead an ecchi.
In addition, our MC is BASIC AS FUCK. Okay, so he's "kind and compassionate" in Kitagawa's eyes, has a cool passion, and is overall very hardworking. But all of those traits go down the drain the second you have to go through ANOTHER scene where they're both horny again. Give me something different pleaseeeee. And they just had to give the tsundere character a crush on the MC too, because of course they did.
Here's the real question, why does it deserve a 7?
For starters, the visuals are amazing, I mean there's this one scene where MC Gojo and Kitagawa are at the beach, and they're just taking in the moment, looking at the sparkly waves, school's out, etc. Gojo dips his feet into the water and Kitagawa learns that it's his first time at the beach. There's nothing really ecchi about it and it just seems like our characters are getting some time to relax. And then you see that one scene where Kitagawa snaps a photo of Gojo while he's enjoying the waves without him noticing, and it's kind of sweet.
Second, I did like the message that anyone can cosplay, no matter how they look, how they present, who they are. That was nice to see, and none of the characters reacted to it negatively. There were also some subtle cosplay tips brought into the mix, which is a nice way for someone who doesn't know much about it to gain interest.
Finally, similar to my first reason, as long as I ignored the ecchi parts, it still had some nice moments where you couldn't help but smile a little, such as in the festival scene, where it just seemed a little more natural. I also appreciated how although Kitagawa went shopping with Gojo to find new clothes, she understood that he felt more comfortable in his samue and jinbei (blue work/summer robes.)
More nitpicking/random comments:
-Deadass it's kind of funny how dedicated Gojo was to get the outfits to be perfect, as in he was willing to play a full hentai game like it was nothing
- Kitagawa's crush on Gojo doesn't make much sense to me, but that kind of reflects how I see some of my friend's crushes on people (it doesn't make sense to me.)
- Animes should just stop the Lolicon thing all together :(
TLDR:
7/10 for visuals and specifically the non-ecchi moments
