It goes without saying, but this adaptation is unfortunately a disservice to the masterpiece it derives itself from. Besides the animation, which I could say is 'mid' (not terrible or bad, but just not remarkable), it's hard to blame the anime for its shortcomings. The VN is just extremely long and relies hard on both the aspects of narration and first person perspectives, which are both kinda hard to adapt into a show like this. This means the pacing is way too fast, so the stuff that it does adapt is half-baked at best. And on top of that, it only covers half of the ... VN chronologically, so you wouldn't even get the full experience regardless.

The experience you get in the anime would be about like 20-30% of what it's adapting, so you're better off reading the VN itself, or the manga if you don't wanna do that. If you like 'watching', there is also an ongoing live stage play you could watch the clips for. (I've heard good things but am yet to see, which is also the same case for the manga for me)

Best thing I've ever seen in my life. A perfect homage to the series so beloved to my life and childhood, it showed pretty much something for every fan of the franchise to enjoy or hold onto. The artstyle switches and varies a lot between all the different looks they were trying to capture, even making all of those 3D western cartoon designs into a perfect blend of anime and whatever they were originally such as TFPrime's depiction. Definitely was something I looked forward to, and I'm a little sad that this special was all we got. Regardless, it was an amazing thing to behold
