Honestly, this movie was pretty decent. It started off a little rough with the main girl's brisk personality, but the story was able to progress well regardless. I like how this movie touched upon the stuff that disabled people have to face regularly, stuff that isn't talked about much, like societal scorn, ableism, and having your life out of reach (in terms of both physically and with dreams). When I first saw the trailer for this, I was super excited that this manga got an adaptation until I saw the animation style. The animation is similar to colored in manga panels with small movement here and there along with voice acting.
Looking past the bare bones animation, these OVAs were actually pretty decent. Each 13 minute OVA has short scenes of what goes on in the daily life of an ex-yakuza househusband and they are absolutely hilarious. As a lover of Gundam Unicorn, Char's Origin, and the Universal Century, I had very high expectations for this movie before it came out. I was so excited to watch it, but was quite disappointed while watching it.
Now don't get me wrong, the art was stunning and colorful and the short sections of fight music were catchy, but I still feel it was lacking. The plot was slow and confusing - it took me most of the movie to determine whether or not Mafty was a Char lookalike (who we never see), an organization, or the main character. For anyone coming to watch this movie after watching Gundam Unicorn and being blown away by how good it was, be aware that this movie is nowhere near as good as its prequel. Its plot is also not significant enough to have to watch before watching the Hathaway movies.
At first glance, Gundam NT mimics Gundam Unicorn with its beautiful animations and catchy soundtrack, but it falls short in terms of characters and plot. The Two Doctors of Darkness focuses on Black Jack competing medically with his arch nemesis Dr. Kiriko (from the older original Black Jack OVAS) while also trying to find a cure for a disease that could end the world. These Black Jack specials are a combination of Dr. Black Jack's personal backstory and the stories of patients that he has treated. These episodes are a decent introduction to the world of Black Jack if you are planning on watching the 2004 TV series or do not want to watch the long episodes of the 1993 series.
