Visual similarity is the first thing people will tell you when you ask them why x show and y show is similar, because it's what you saw. Such is always the case with fellow all-girls, somewhat yuri anime. Yuruyuri, serialized in comic yurihime, is, of course, highly lesbianated. Teenage male audiences in general will find nothing wrong with this show. And even put aside the visual, Yuruyuri itself has some witty-funny dialogue and deserved to be judged by its content and not just visual. But there are people who will totally convinced by visual alone to watch or skip something, and I can't blame them, it's just basic human reaction. Yuyushiki, serialized in mangatime kirara, is recommended for people with a taste for heavily-dialogue anime that features a lot of jokes, puns, and funny conversation that isn't found in real life. Maybe you used to have such conversation sometime back in high school, if so, this show is sure to make you go all nostalgic about old friends and times younger you spend with them. Also, despite being all girl with recently-popular moe visual, it's not as lesbianated as Yuruyuri and I think straight girl will not be annoyed as much. There you go. Yuruyuri is ultimate fun time for people who don't mind their sexuality. Yuyushiki is more neutral sexuality-wise and not as visually distracting, so you can gun for Japanese listening practice or whatever. Notice: I mentioned a lot of sexuality and gender stuffs in my review because sex-sale is bread and butter of half the anime in the market and I think you should know about it.

Visually, they are of the complete opposite. You don't like both of them because "the art is similar, they both look the same lol" like in most recommendations go. Anyway, it's their audio offering that make them similar. They are among the recently popular, dialogue-heavy slice-of-life anime that simply shows you what the main casts talk about during their normal days in life. Of course, by normal, it's their normal and not your normal, thus probably not boring. Making boring daily life interesting is the heart of this genre. More important than the extreme reaction or breathtaking story, dialogue is preferred over any other kind of selling point, as far as recent comedy goes. Also, I do not like to admit this, but Yuyushiki art is pretty much what fits in the recent category of "moe" style. And for some reason, when people see this kind of art, they somehow automatically assume the story would sucks, and They are right most of the time. I can't deny that, but when you get better at Japanese and stopped relying on subtitle, you might get into the dialogue better. You will overlook the style and get into the substance soon enough. The enjoyment of watching Yuyushiki and Danshikou came from "understanding dialogues" and not "awesome visual" like the usual action-packed anime. Gotta admit you can't get into the heart of dialogue-heavy anime that easily, but if you try, I ensure sure it will worth your while.

Not exactly easy to recognize, but this two shows sure are in the same class. They both are the prominent manga from magazine Manga Time Kirara, the first brand name you should look for in shoujo-ai market. Basic three stereotypes shared by both anime are the normal person, the bright funny one, and the slapstick supporter. These are pretty basic features of a Japanese manga/anime/anything that is comedy centric. You can't miss that. The other selling point both show share is the amount of raging lesbian. GA is more subtle and doesn't have girls trying to touch and squeeze and lick each other directly, but subtlety does not equal non-existence. Yes, there are quite a lot of shoujo-ai in there if your imagination is up for it. Yuyushiki is more visually obvious. There are girls calling each other cute and attempt to do publicly not-so-acceptable stuffs all the time. If you want your girls love to be more graphic than subtle, this is truly the choice.

Ishida to Asakura has a ridiculous level of randomness you could never expect from an anime. It's too random, it's more like Youtube recommended playlist for naked people on drug wearing tinfoil hat backward walking dog while running cat. It's pretty difficult to say that some anime is different from the other with all overhype we have, but this one IS different, and I use that term very sparingly. That term is subjective alright, but if you trust my portfolio and like ridiculously random unexplainable phenomena which breaks all archetype, go watch it. Double J is anothere kind of fun. While not madly random, feature a healthy amount of punny fun time. The show also make fun of usual club-activity setting as seen in K-on like anime too. If you want to take a little break from commonplace setting, this is for you. Too bad, the ridiculously short episodes are never enough to satisfy the hunger of mad fans.

You cannot go wrong with this one. Both are the higher profile manga serialzed on Manga Time Kirara. The noteworthy selling point of every manga in this magazine is girls' love. If you can't go a day without non-explicit girl-to-girl cuddling then both are the right choice. Plot is not non-existent, but sadly, there are quite a lot of anime out there which qualified more as mild sex-sale than 30 minutes of storytelling. It's possible to praise how good the story, jokes, puns, and conversation is, but at the end of the day many people watch this just for d'awww. But that shouldn't let you down, because there are a lot of little girl talkshow manga out there, and this two qualified as a comedy gold mine, thus animated.

Not exactly a plot twist, but both shows have drastic shift of mood around the ending. From a seamlessly for-fun-only show with not enough stuff to worry about to the dramatic mess of growing-up, decision, and change. Both are pretty cool if you want a full-blown comedy. But Toradora fare better as a reflection of youth, the last part is totally a grinding melodrama. The last part was well-made, believable story, good dramatic atmosphere, and everyone was scary, even the funny one. For me, I personally dislike drama and can't stand watching one from the beginning, but both shows started off as comedy, and it get me hooked. Watching until the end was the only option. Pretty awesome how these shows made a comedy fan actually watch and care about characters and their life-changing decisions.

They don't take themselves seriously. There is a setting here for both of them. Police VS mafia and saving the world kind of settings. But they don't care about that. Everything is about making jokes, making them both Boke-Tsukkomi slapstick kind of anime. It just that doing slapstick in average modern high-school setting get old fast, so why not do it where the existence of superpower, werewolves, magic and world destruction is real? That gotta make things interesting. Too bad, that has already started to get old too.

How did I skipped this. Both shows look stereotypically fantasy/ sci-fi. However, they are essentially comedy, no more no less. There are dramatic sequences and action scenes popping out from time to time, but it's not the bread and butter of the shows. AND the shows will do perfectly fine without them. I believe this two qualified as 'not taking itself seriously' kind of show. It's good for casual audience seeking random humor, but is poison to those who seeks serious thrill and believable drama.

The fact that both shows share a lot of similar anime-related features are clear as day, but the most fascinating part about both shows are how they take on the area that most anime can't: discussing actual knowledge. Spice and Wolf series are a lot like Trading for Dummy printed in feudal age. They have feudal settings with a dash of fantasy, that's what we knew easily from the cover. But you don't judge the book by its cover, or you might overlook something nice. Spice and Wolf discuss trading, politics, microeconomic and others relevant knowledge for an average feudal traders. It sure doesn't live up against your professor's Econ101, but for an anime, a mean for entertainment, they did well including knowledge, or at least knowledge-flavored contents in its show. MaoYuu settings take on a bigger scale. Lead characters are playing politicians, and unlike random trader, they have considerable amount of influence on politics in their world. Thus, MaoYuu feature a simple discussion of war, politic, macroeconomy, and other stuffs relevant to Demon Lord. Both MaoYuu and Spice and Wolf are anime featuring ACTUAL knowledge which is a rare find for an anime. Gundam does NOT discuss Physics used to build giant space robot, and K-On! never teach a single guitar cord, do they? This is what set MaoYuu and Spice and wolf apart from most anime, they discuss, even if it's just the most fundamental part of the whole field of study. But remember again, they are not Econ101 or Introduction to Feudal History, they are still anime, the mean for entertainment. Do not compare it to actual books and say they sucked. Be classy, judge them for what they are. And yes, if you enjoy economy, politics, and history in real life, you will likely enjoy them both. But if you always on the look for action packed Medieval fantasy, you might be disappointed though.

Genuinely funny shows that made use of casual sexual euphemism and being less random than most Youtube viral style "so random it's funny" we see in anime more and more. Stuffs like waterskiing jesus polar bear in a bikini eating spaghetti with noses are not the kind of humor being used here. If you prefer randomness, there are better shows, and even the internet is here to your disposal. SYD, while not one of a kind, is much more original than most school anime that look similar. It is dialogue-based fun, without the over-reaction we see in other cheap funny anime. Well, those are funny too, but using weird facial reaction or shouting to tell viewers when to laugh gets old fast. Ixion Saga, while not everyone will prefer, or even recognize its jokes as jokes, surely has its own niche out there. It makes good use of lame pun and sexual euphemism, just like SYD, but also features some action that isn't out of place in this halfbreed comedy-action, not as much as some other anime with CLEARLY OUT-OF-PLACE DRAMA that pop up in the middle of slapstick jokes routine. That lukewarm, neither dramatic nor funny feeling is less of a problem in Ixion Saga.

How can they make countless sequels without being Dragon Ball or Pokemon? By being genuinely funny and stay true to the audience, of course. Anime revenue comes a lot from ads, but a lot more from DVD, Blu Ray, and even miscellaneous goods like figurine (not the case with this two though). This two show release constant stream of stuff that are, guaranteed, to have some niche buying their DVDs. No marketing magic here, just being constant and know your own niche. Beside similarities that are marketing-related, stuffs like THE FEEL IS SIMILAR, THEY BOTH HAVE GIRLS IN IT, are being repeated for eternity in recommendation area so I shall refrain from doing so.

Yuri in less distilled form, but Slice of Life more heavily concentrated than crystal meth. These are the qualities that will either make you love or hate both shows equally. Tamako Market is pure slife of life, telling us what the largely female casts do daily. It is set in an average modern day settings, and focus on the little ladies' activity within their sphere of interest. There are some arguable fantasy elements, but I shall refrain from spoiling that. Hidamari Sketch is also telling us what four to six girls, depending on season, do with their life and art class. Yes, they actually sketch from time to time. Yuri, while considerably weak for an Anime full of soft skinned ladies, is considerably more visible than in Tamako Market, but not enough to put them apart. Which one should you watch? Both or none.

Japanese national standard of slice-of-life genre. Anime, manga, drama, or other form of fictional works, if it is slice-of-life, this is what it will looks like. Feature both super interesting and blatantly average lead characters to create contrast. Have some place they can gather or some activity they have in common to create conversation. Emphasize a lot on stuffs that ACTUAL Japanese people talk about, like season, weather and how's that guy doing. While both anime looks a lot different visually, I assure you, that if they are both a live-action TV show, they will give you the same reaction. The unlikely comedy that actually has a potential to be serious dramatic action, but somehow disregard any credibility they build up over the course of the show, end up as a full-blown comedy. Sci-fi fantasy settings with fancy weapon and power? Check. Evil knight controlled by some higher secret order? Check. The chosen dude who accidentally jumped into other world and happen to bel the one who will ultimately destroy all evil? Check. Ixion Saga is an old-school fantasy andventure with all mentioned above, but WITHOUT any intention to actually become the full-blown badass anime. It's just a slapstick comedy with unusual setting. That's it. Half season in and they NEVER take on any threat, war, famine, or evil overlord seriously. Galaxy Angel? This decade old space opera is no different. Macross like space combat machine with sexy pilot? Check. Powerful artifact from the past that shouldn't get into wrong hand? Check. Evil organization and disastrous timebending event? Check. Trying to actually fight evil and not fooling around baking burnt cake and finding lost cats? No fucking way. Is it bad? Not really. They are not lukewarm like those action harem with plenty of boobies catfighting each other and confuse viewers what they are watching. The feeling "Are you trying to be funny or badass?" should have come up to you once when watching the "bad" mix of drama and comedy in many of the anime I don't care to name. These two are not. Ixion Saga is funny enough to actually be a comedy, and Galaxy Angel lack of mentioning any conflict make them an obvious candidate for just-for-fun show. For the first season at least.

A marketing reminder that TV shows can have as much seasons as they want if: - They have clear, specific and devoting target market, (or broad, countrywide, audiences, aka. everyone, which these two are not) - They keep up with their original theme, but also adapt to seasonal theme. (Swimsuit episode, valentine episode, christmas episode, etc) Japanese shows do this very well. - Their first season did well, but following season did even better, and keep improving. If the following season do worse, the shows are destined to end, most of the time.

Using the restaurant theme but actually can take place in any settings, Shirokuma Cafe and Working are pretty much situation comedy that happen to take place in restaurant and coincidentally share the common activity of arubaito (part-time work.) Shirokuma cafe take a safe route of all-age and genders appeal. I double dare anyone to come up with demographic group that can't watch this. Working is a male-oriented show that have lots of girls (as usual) and happen to appeal to female too due to it's neutral standing between male and female emphasis. It is made from female-mangaka manga that serialized in late-teen to adult mangazine, but pretty much anyone can read it with no parental advisory.

Story by an established comedy writers, art by an unknown moe artist. Both show are anime adaptations of such manga, with average moe art that appeal to anyone, and wacky story by surreal comedy writers. Animation wise not everything in the nutshell looks similar. Double J take a "student project" kind of art direction while Joshiraku is relatively mainstream. They don't share VA cast. They are not even in the same league. Joshiraku is a full-length TV series while Double J is animated short with 3 minutes per episode at best. Should avoid comparing production quality of the show with different budget at all cost, it just not a good thing to do. So it comes down to story, both shows are similar if and only if you take a good look at the jokes they throw around at each other.

After a session of careful thought, you can see that what the lead male characters are doing is pretty similar. Presented like there are something supernatural going on, both shows are about myth busting in a world without the slightest existence of sci-fi elements. It's all about the idea of unconventional presentation of a very conventional, realistic setting. Denpa Onna anime, as far as it goes, has nothing defying the laws of physics. No matter how it wanted you to think or feel about, there is not one. No saying about the original light novel as it might has some surprising revelation later, but it is likely that there might not. Hyouka on the other hand is beautified with scenes that look and feel otherworldly, but they are at best the presentation of character's feeling. Again, no ghosts, aliens, psychic, time traveler and evil crime orgainzation to be found. Just a bunch of high schoolers being curious of stuff you will never ever give a quarter of fuck.

Judged by how character setting is almost man-to-man similar, can't refuse that it will make the overall mood and tone similar too. That's how it's happening. The leading male and narrator, Kyon and Oreki Houtarou, are made from the same mold. Average, not standing out, and does not want to take initiative whatsoever in school activities. And guess what, they are getting pushed around by girl of course, The ultimate reason why any straight man go out of their comfort zone. The story of Hyouka revolve around solving mystery, not a grand one, but very well made. Well made enough to be believable, even when portrayed by 2D fictional character and produced by a studio responsible for one of the most surreal, unbelievably insane jokes show ever. For watching these shows, you got two things to enjoy. First, how the story develop, how the string of mysteries is getting solved, and how the world around main characters reacts. And second, you get to see the development in attitude of the main character, how he sees and reacts to everything changed little by little. We don't see that in every anime. Most of character in animated series are cold-cast and do not change for the rest of the show. So if you want to see a person that is inspired to change themselves, even if they are fictional characters, look no further. You might found some inspiration of your own.

Higher profile all-girls anime with some but not unacceptable lesbian tendencies (yes, there are MORE obviously lesbian shows out in the wild.) A-channel is the serialized series in a less obvious girl-loves magazine Manga Time Kirara. One of my favorite magazine that also home to the even more prominent anime such as Hidamari Sketch and K-On!. The positioning of this magazine doesn't allow girl to blatantly kissing or making out, thus is pretty SFW. And A-channel is a stereotypical Manga Time Kirara's manga, and same goes in its anime adaptation. No overly lesbian action. YuruYuri is serialized in Yuri Hime magazine. With more frank title, this magazine is openly yuri (lesbian) and kissing, making out, openly more-than-friend relationship is common in this magazine. But sex is still off limit as this magazine is no place for hentai. YuruYuri is an example of manga from this magazine. Openly homosexual, this is not a recommended reading in the religious part of the U.S., obviously. And the anime adaptation also fails to disappoint, as it is pretty much everything the manga was, plus considerably more fan service than you will ever bargain for.

Daily life anime (actually an acceptable name of a genre in Japan, being called nichijou which literally mean daily life,) but with a teaspoon of supernatural touch. Kokoro Connect actually have somethings extraterrestrial taking place (body switching) but refuses to treat itself as a supernatural anime. Instead it always goes on like it is no big deal. The mood and tone of the show resembles other daily-life anime where sci-fi or supernatural elements cannot be found. Hyouka on the other hand actually have no sci-fi context or supernatural power whatsoever, but is being treated as having one. There are sequences that look otherworldly, but no, there are nothing outside Physics law. It is also worth noting that while production quality is not as stellar, Kokoro Connect character design (not about they look or personalities, but how they are drawn by animator) closely resembles that off KyoAni's Hyouka. Which possibly be another reason you might like the show. There are plenty of people who prefer anime with certain styles of art regardless of genre, so if you like K-On, Hyouka or other KyoAni goodness, why not give this a try.

Supernatural flavored lovey-dovey-bishoujo-fanfare anime. Sci-fi element is weak and less worthy of mentioning than your average Star Trek. The fun part of Nyaruko-san is obviously not wet tentacles trying to ass-rape random teenage boy, but hot chicks that spout sexy nonsense and wear easy-to-took-off uniform. They both are anime with hot chick, slight of life, comedy and mild sex sell. But with some extraterrestrial topping. Possibly mark the era that the legendary romance harem like Love Hina is a little bit too boring in normal world setting, so Japan added robots and aliens to them. Now you understand where all those animes came from. What else is worth mentioning? Not really. The pace are different, the humor are not at all similar, the art direction is all cool but not worth pointing out, the voice acting is not the same style for most part of the show. End of discussion. Now choose your porn, if you have high tolerence to everything, both are funny. If you hate overly fast paced comedy, go with Denpa Onna. If you fall asleep when watching Titanic and fall asleep again decade later when watching Titanic3D, go for Nyaruko-san. No one can sleep with that thing on.

If you are surprised by the girls in this show even when acknowledging its plot, then watch something beside Naruto and come back later. I recommend you googling 2 girls 1 cup though, for instant vaccine to this kind of characters. Danshi koukousei no nichijou, literally: daily lives of high school boys. This one is tricky, but look at it this way, you have seen harem anime that give 100% attention to hot chicks and 0% to the male right? The one that male characters have no personality whatsoever. This things work other way around in DKNN. The boys here are more prominent and the girls are intentionally made into a dummy character with one emotion. You will see most girls doing the same stuff all the time. Why? Because we are not following them all day long, the anime only show the batshit insane side of them in order to make jokes. Because they are joke characters and not a central interest of the show, whenever they show up, it's goofy time. But here comes the promise: if you have a refined (aka. fucking perverted) taste for girls and want to sees girls with crazy emotion, and ONLY crazy emotion, this is a show for you. Whenever girl A shows up: SUDDENLY MIRAI NIKKI, whenever girl B shows up: SUDDENLY SCHOOL DAYS. Well, something like that. The rate is not 18+ but if you are not those people who took anime for the love of life but know only Naruto and Dragon Ball, your imagination can probably crank it up a few gears. Yuruyuri is, after all, a moe comedy you see popping up a lot from Japan over the last decade. It's imagination inducing, fap inducing, or any other word you would use to describe anime that make doujin artists want to draw the characters naked. Please note that both feature plenty of horny girls trying to get into someone pants/skirts. You like those humor below the belt? You sure will enjoy both, with Nyaruko-san being a little more awesome. That's right, Nyaruko-san feature cute girls as well, but they are more expressive about sexy time and are not bound by social norms. The graphic may be as safe as Yuruyuri but for the script Nyaruko-san is straight out of playboy sexual life discussion corner, with a little degrading to make it not adult-only of course.

Despise the fact that SZS is fucking surreal and DKNN never ever defy gravity in the slightest, they both share notable similarities. Humor, the vein of all comedy show. It's True that black comedy in SZS is way different than puns and slapstick used in DKNN, but you could see that the pacing is pretty fast in both of the show. Sometimes they slow down to let audiences catch their breath and get a hold of the joke, but for most part they are Speed Racer. Pacing, like I say in the humor part, they both are blazing fast. DKNN is a proof that slice of life don't necessarily need to have an easy-going sleep-inducing pace like Aria, Honey and Clover, or Natsume Yuujinsho. Voice acting, and I am not talking about the cast. It's the instruction the actors received. Their script are all about over-reacting for most part of the show except explanation phase or non-slapstick time. Not exactly Japanese-learning environment. Setting. If you ignore the occasional dimensional warping in SZS, they are both school comedy with plenty of students discussing nonsense you never actually talk about back in high school. Or did you?
