This anime left me feeling hungry and unsatisfied. Like the waiter forgot to bring my bowl of rice to pair with all the assorted dishes, so there was no context to my meal, but I just continued eating thinking the waiter was just slow and would bring it eventually, but then I finished all the food.
The first few episodes gave me high hopes as the premise was rather interesting - a port city ruled by mafia opposed mostly by a lone agency full of misfit detectives...plus supernatural powers. Warring philosophies related to justice, value of life, purpose of death, etc gave purpose
...
to the storyline and characters.

Fashion and looks have an industrial age feel, similar to Baccano’s, and the creators put emphasis on eyes that flash squint, glare, to portray distinct thoughts and emotions. Also, with laggy internet that intermittently froze on random scenes, I noted the settings to be quite detailed, even the ones that are supposed to fade into the background. And the fight scenes are high-quality as well without any disproportionate bodies spinning into the air or characters making weird/bland faces when they thought no one was looking ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).
Opening and closing themes are catchy. Soundtrack wasn’t noteworthy though. Completely blended in with the mood. Probably wouldn’t recognize it if I heard it elsewhere.
This anime is full of dark characters with dark pasts struggling to survive and to find reasons to continue doing so. Characters like Dazai, Atsushi, and Kyouka have internal conflicts that lead to their interesting (and somewhat split) personalities, but the anime hardly goes into their backstory and thoughts, leaving them with a lack of depth and lost appeal. Fortunately in later seasons the anime somewhat addresses this (ie exploring Dazai’s past) thank god.
The anime swings between dark & gory and then the classic exaggerated anime humor complete with the enlarged faces and simplified expressions. Sometimes they’re funny, but sometimes they’re not, like it didn’t even match the character’s personality sometimes or it was awkward according to the situation. Totally the kind of humor if you did that in real life, I would judge you...hard.
If you enjoy cheesy humor and idiosyncratic supernatural characters, then watch this. Despite my criticisms, I finished until the end, and I heard it gets better in the future seasons, so I will continue the series~
hope u enjoy (ㆁᴗㆁ✿)

If you are looking for some positivity in your life after failing a final, going through a heartbreak, or just in general bc life consistently punches you in the face OTL, then this is the anime for you~ I've lost count of the number of times I've rewatched episodes simply because I needed an anime that felt like a hug ⊂(・﹏・⊂)
Honestly, your typical shounen. Useless but high-spirited main character (Hinata) with blazing orange hair and seemingly impossible obstacles to overcome versus a strong rival with a rotten personality (Kageyama) but slightly tsundere who influence each other to rapidly transform. Sports animes don't
...
have many options for where the storyline can progress (win or lose), so plot twists are not the main attraction here... though the anime is basically based on an initial plot twist...
The colors and landscapes are seriously soothing. The early morning and late night scenes have a lot of impact while a significant portion of the anime is positioned on a volleyball court. However, the visuals on court aren't boring either as it's action packed and varied. Character design is also charming. When everyone is wearing similar uniforms, hairstyles get really fun and there are even freckles! ( 。ᵘ ᵕ ᵘ 。)
I seriously depend on Haikyuu a lot to survive college. Falling into an abyss of misery during late night studying? Haikyuu soundtrack. It's positive, motivating, and calming which works perfectly as background music so you can still focus on the task at hand. Not to mention all the feels that uplift your current mood when you hear it. Opening and closing songs are also pretty catchy for Season 1. Another highlight, the yelps people make when they get smacked by volleyballs or by their team mates are hilarious.
Okay, so character development is the real appeal of a sports anime. In season 1, you see the first hints of character growth in various characters including focus on non-mains ie Asahi and opponents. You get glimpses of their backstory, so you feel like you've known them for years and frankly, you get attached. Additionally, their development isn't surface level or a mere level-up in volleyball prowess. The author dives deeply into their personalities and connects their history to outline the obstacles they overcome on and off the court.
I'm not a huge fan of sports anime, but I adore Haikyuu. It is a well-balanced anime that brings a ray of sunshine into my day. The comedic effects are charming and well-timed. Throughout the series, there is continuous character development, especially for the more minor characters that end up being some watchers' favorites~
hope u enjoy!

If you've ever pondered where the fine line between being human vs being a cyborg ٩(̾●̮̮̃̾•̃̾)۶ is, then this is the movie for you~. Or even if you just think the concept is intriguing. Because in the 21st century, this topic is very, very relevant.
Smart phones have become essential for survival as technology deeply integrates into our lives (China has essentially eliminated the need for paper money, and some individuals cannot find their own home without Google Maps), and technology is even incorporated into our physical bodies whether it be a cosmetic upgrade or spine replacement.
The connections between the anime and our reality
...
that point towards are own dystopian future are countless...but anyway,...
Interesting, but not mind-blowing. The plot itself is predictable for this movie, though we must remember that this is only setting the stage for future action. The real focus is philosophical questions the movie poses and the viewer ponders during the movie and hopefully also relates to the current real world outside of the computer screen whether it be 1995 (the year I was born hahaa (⎻▵ ⎻)) or 2020 (the year I am writing this).
I'm a huge fan of 90's art. Though it's not super HD and shiny, the artists make magic using limited color pallets to generate a mood (sunsets look better in 90s anime in my opinion), and the grittiness adds to the dystopian society that contrasts run down parts of a city abandoned for the new. However, today in 2020 we have a new definition of what 'high tech' looks like hehe. There is definitely a huge focus on the human body where a lot of it is exposed (nude) or exaggerated (very muscular). Underneath the pristine flesh, however, is a lot of metal parts, bolts, screws, and very little blood. And the least human characters have round eyes that will pierce right into your soul. Creepy.
The main song for this movie is a traditional Japanese wedding chant sung in Bulgarian folk style - seriously. Marriage between man and machine perhaps. The vocals are dissonant, chilling, and poses as an omen for things to come... I love it. The drumming is dramatic and gives Akira cyberpunk vibes. Here's a live version for anyone who is interested https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z64HCi2rQkE&feature=youtu.be&ab_channel=NinoslavNovic
Mostly an introduction to those who will play more parts in the future. Not much development which is understandable. The two really interesting characters were Major Matoko and the Puppet Master, who, ironically, are both cyborgs. It makes sense to concentrate on the characters that are most 'machine-like' as that's where the imperative question of where the line between human and machines lies is most relevant.
If 90's cyberpunk with an underlying philosophical debate is your thing, then you're in for a treat. Better yet, it's a relatively long story where this was just the appetizer and the main course and dessert are waiting.
hope u enjoy!
