First of all, I would like to say that this is my very first review of an anime on here or on anywhere else for that matter. This anime has been completely nagging at me to write some sort of review on it and so here I am. I may not be the best reviewer but I need to somehow convey how I feel.
Akatsuki no Yona was something that took time to grow on me personally, but when it did, it grew like Jack's beanstalk.
My favorite (and probably most people's) part is the characterization. It seems like most anime nowadays are just reusing the
...
same old character tropes that everyone has seen at least ten times already. Akatsuki no Yona does not do this. They all have reasons to how they act and the reasons are mostly made apparent so there is no bull-shitting us.
Every (main) character has their own life-changing experience that marks the beginning of their development and growth, especially the main character Yona. However it's not something that happens quickly. There are little changes here and there, but nothing happens overnight. It's all very...real. Which brings me to the main reason I love this show. The emotion in this anime is SO REAL and BELIEVABLE. I mean.. every time a character would cry, I would feel like crying too. In fact I did. Many times. I would say this show is not for people who don't like feeling intense emotions because it definitely makes you feel them. It also expresses them just..so well. The art combined with the amazing voice acting combined with fitting music and intense conversations really make this anime phenomenal. The characters really came to life on me and made me feel for them multiple times.
Luckily it's not all heart-break though as there are laughs to fill in gaps between crying sessions. Amazingly, even the comedy is meaningful. It never feels misplaced and it always makes sense, never relying on petty jokes about a woman's breast size or anything like that.
I'd also like to say that even though it has a lot of emotional scenes, the overall tone of it is not sad, because that is not the point of the anime. There are many wise quotes and many moments that make you feel warm inside. I think that for a shoujo genre, this anime is definitely one of the most mature.
Now I'm not saying that it's a perfect anime, because those don't exist. However I feel that it has succeeded in ways most anime nowadays don't and for that, I think it deserves a watch.
The only thing that I think is lacking is the length. It doesn't cover every page of the manga, probably because it wasn't as popular as it should have been.
