I had high hopes for this but was disappointed. The first part was great for me, but the second part constantly reminded me of Spirited Away while feeling it was unpolished and just decent, especially with how the additional characters were used in the story. It's got a good story that was, IMO, massacred by most of the other elements of the film besides the art, which was beautiful.
Story:
It's got a good story, to begin with. It has it's touching and relatable moments accompanied by a well-executed, clear, and easy-to-understand flow of events and no pacing issues. My only gripe is the fact that
...
most elements of the anime didn't feel like it capitalized much from the story it was trying to execute, therefore I wasn't touched by the story as much as I think I should've been because of everything else besides the art and the story itself.
Art:
Good art with good use of CGI (I think??). But having seen some works from Shinkai, I'd think of it as very good but not that great. The art isn't something to behold or to be amazed at, IMO. But I like how consistent the art style is and how it's somehow familiar whilst being unique. Overall, the art was beautiful and consistent but nothing breathtaking.
Sound:
The soundtrack fits well enough. But it's nothing special. Throughout the whole film, it just felt like it was there and never really stood out on it's own, for me, in any way, even in the touching moments. The soundtrack never struck me and it was just there.
Character:
Not much to say about the characters, TBH. No one stands out for me, they were engaging enough, but I think the story wasn't able to flesh these characters out well enough for me. It seemed like I was just told to accept these characters as how the story depicts them to be instead of me figuring these characters out throughout the course of the story, especially in the case of Kento Hinode but exempting Miyo. But what bugged me the most was the Mask Seller character, who, as an antagonist, was underdeveloped and seemed much like a convenient villain of some sort. The characters, overall, was okay except for the case of Miyo.
Enjoyment:
I enjoyed it fairly. It didn't blow me away, and only struck me in a minute way, but I wouldn't regret spending the time to watch this. For me, it's a forgettable watch but fairly enjoyable at the moment nonetheless.
Overall it was just fair for me. Some elements of the film had potential to be great like the story and the characters, but I feel like the story failed to make the most out of these characters and vice versa. It's fairly enjoyable but forgettable.
