I'm gonna explain why I think Re: zero is bad:
First of all, I wanna talk about animes that shoot shit at you. Re: zero is literally presenting concept after concept and having no explanation about any of them nor mentioned ever again. I feel that the author has a great idea in mind but it is too goddamn lazy to put it into work (the author creates a unsolvable or hard situation and then he shoots us with a concept he will never mention again in the entire show, that's lazy, bad writing and deus ex machina)
It is a really anticlimatic show and when I
...
saw people talking about how good episode 15 was I was like: "wow I'm not liking the show so much, let's wait until episode 15!" and then I fucking saw it and I couldn't believe it. I started laughing my ass off about this nonsense stupid thing.
Now let's talk about Subaru. A lot of people say that he has a lot of character development but having character development doesn't make a character good automatically. So Subaru went from a dumbass to a less dumbass? That doesn't make him good (for example, Lelouch has very little character development and I believe he is the best anime protagonist of all time)
In my opinion, there are a lot more things to consider in terms of how good a character is. Yeah, Subaru is a relatively realistic MC because it's a normal person in a fantasy world. Also if you wanna consider how good a character is by their development, I think there are a lot of MCs with a lot better development (Guts, Thorfinn, Meruem, Phos, etc)
On the other hand, the context is important. Re: zero is supposed to be an adult show with "dark" plot and story but I disagree. Yeah, maybe it's darker than average but it's not fucked up. Whenever I see people praising the story because it is "dark" I start to laugh my ass off. People who say that haven't watched a truly fantasy seinen thriller nor watched a good fantasy anime in general (Made in Abyss is much darker and so much better, same for Berserk or Houseki no Kuni. Also, there are better "ordinary" fantasy animes or isekai like Mushoku Tensei) Anyway, it's focused on a "dark" story, so why is Subaru's goal having an elf waifu? Wasn't it supposed to be an adult and deep story? Why do Subaru's arcs consist of trying to get a waifu? It feels so anticlimatic. In a show like Chainsaw man it fits because of the type of show it is (also Subaru is a fucking loser and has 99 girls around him for no reason whatsoever).
In conclusion, I think re: zero tries too hard being edgy rather than just being a good story and I personally despise this show. It is a good anime if you are a depressed 15-year-old emo boy. It has good worldbuilding and character designs but that's about it for me
