I have read the manga and really enjoyed it so I was looking forward to the anime adaptation and I was greatly pleased. This review will be divided into different categories where I will highlight the positive (+) and negatives (-) of different sections in this anime. There are some spoilers but I try to keep it moderate.
STORY
+ The tale of an elderly man who has become disconnected from his family and dying of cancer. Fortunately, after a strange accident, he is turned into a robot by aliens and use his new body to become a superhero.
+ Includes interesting comments on
...
internet culture and modern society.
+ Most episodes begin with a strong hook and ends with a strong cliff-hanger.
+ Truly terrifying and unpredictable villain which poses a real threat to the world
+ Efficient storytelling with subtlety
+ A lot of spectacular and intense moments (Some can be really disturbing)
+ Lots of emotional, heartfelt moments
- Disappointing and rushed ending to a great anime.
- Too much focus on the villain and not enough on the hero and his relationship with his family
- Aliens are never mentioned again in the story after the first episode.
CHARACTERS
+ Elderly man as a protagonist and superhero
+Surprising goal for the protagonist daughter Mari
+ Terrifying villain who can't be assigned a clear motive and is totally unpredictable.
+ Brief introduction and development of victim of an upcoming crime
- Lack of deeper exploration of the problems which may have disconnected Inuyashki from his family
- Romantic relation between Villain and a girl needed to be fleshed out more
ANIMATION
+ CGI blends well with background art well in the early part of the show
+ Greatly detailed 3d models for the mechanical bodies of the hero and the villain
+ Sound effects are pretty consistent and well designed
+ Solid voice acting which really shows the character emotions
+Variety of soundtracks to matches the slice of life, thriller, drama and sci-fi elements of the story.
+ Meaningful ending song which message is revealed at the end of the last episode of the anime
- CGI quality is inconsistent and can be bad in certain episodes
Despite it problem I really enjoyed this anime and also the original manga. It personally my favorite of this year and one of the best anime I have watched in a long time. I really wish the editors hadn’t pressured the manga author to rush and finish his manga because it wasn’t selling well in Japan. If Hiroya Oku had been allowed to completely realize his vision for this story I think it could have been a masterpiece.
