I really like how much this story has progressed. The prequel focuses more on how the relationship of Wataru and Saeki came to be, as all stories do. More often than not, it ends there - like a perfect ending to a fairytail.
But no matter how satisfying a relationship unfolds, from the hesitation down to the long awaited confession, somehow it leaves readers like me wanting to see more. This book was exactly the satisfaction I needed.

I am always on the hunt for queer mangas that are sweet and satisfying. And while more often than not I am left defeated by fetishizing, heteronormative, and fujoshi-ridden things to read, Kimi ni wa Todokanai was the light at the end of the tunnel for me.
It has everything there is to find in a slice-of-life BL manga, with a mix of humor and yearning for that best friend you are hesitant to admit your feelings to. It's hard to find BL that doesn't entirely rely on non-consensual themes or have overly heteronormative beliefs, this is why I've set my standards down for any BL that I've stumbled across -- they mostly just end up disappointing me.
Kieta Hatsukoi, however, made me realize that that's not the case at all. Queer stories do not have to be just lewd or be nothing more than a tale of tragedy. It can be grounded.
