Mob Psycho 100 II
add

Main villains are evil corporations run by a man who has taken a bad path in life and lost everything that made him human. For a magical girl series, Hugtto explores themes of masculinity & fatherhood a lot more than you'd expect, and Mob Psycho 100 was always about what it means to be a man.

Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari
add

If you're watching Shield Hero and enjoying the lighter moments of Naofumi crafting & helping people, then Atelier is a fantasy JRPG franchise entirely about crafting & helping people and Escha & Logy is its only anime adaptation. That said, Shield Hero also gets quite dark whereas Atelier is very lighthearted.

Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari

Fantasy adventure series with a cynical twist. That aside, Shield Hero's Filo and Chaika's Fredrica are blonde loli monster girls whose violent solution to most problems serves as comedic relief.

Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari
add

Action adventure fantasy isekai series in which the MC is summoned to the world to be the saviour hero and given a legendary weapon to wield. There's animal girls and riding giants birds and content that's everywhere from edgy suffering to stuff that'd be more at home in a saturday morning kids shows If you watched Shield Hero and wished there were more cute animal girl headpats, then check out Dog Days. If you watched Dog Days and wished it took its grimdark setting seriously, then check out Shield Hero.

Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue.
add

Comedies about a pet trying to make sense of the human world while also doing pet things, i.e., mostly causing trouble. My Roommate Is A Cat has a more dramatic side to it while Lovely Muco is mostly just a comedy.

Merc Storia: Mukiryoku no Shounen to Bin no Naka no Shoujo
add

Anthologies about healers who travel the lands, observing various cultures and helping people with their problems. Each tale often focusing on a single classic theme (e.g. family, independence, responsibility, romance). Merc Storia is mostly simple fairytales for younger audiences, while Mushishi is more contemplative folktales for mature ones.

Dame x Prince Anime Caravan
add

Parodies of bishoujo (D-Frag) and bishounen (DamePri) series. One could call them harems, but the protagonist is basically the only "straight man/woman" in a cast full of self-absorbed narcissists and isn't likely to fall in love with any of them. If they weren't forced into it, they'd stay far away from this nonsense.

Parody series starring a cute girl making friends with a cast of comically one-dimensional characters.

Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau
add

In a world where people live on moving islands in an endless ocean, a soldier who has only known war ends up stranded in a peaceful society. There's an emphasis on a lost history and the antagonists are dogmatic militants. Children of the Whale has magic and seems more centered around violent conflict. Gargantia has giant robots and spends a lot of time on mundane activities.

Eromanga-sensei
add

Not-blood-related incest series in which the step-siblings' recently married parents aren't around to get in the way. The sister is initially apathetic towards her brother, but events take them from "strangers who happen to live together" to an actual family and potentially lovers... assuming one of the other haremettes doesn't steal him away. Of course, these events tend to be shamelessly lewd: Eromanga pushing the boundaries of what vanilla fanservice means, and ImoCho basically putting the hapless sister through a new fetish every episode.

Action Heroine Cheer Fruits
add

School girls form a performance group to try and save something: in Love Live, it's their school; in Cheer Fruits, it's a local hall. Most of the story is about getting better and coming together as a unit.

add

The enemy has been defeated and the world is now at peace. Hooray! ...but what's a magical girl supposed to do now? Be cute and have fun, of course! Mahou Shoujo Nante Mou Ii Desukara is more a parody of magical girl tropes. Hina Logi is more straightforward cute magical girls doing cute magical things.

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni.
add

Ever wanted to be transported to a kids fantasy adventure world and, on top of the typical antics, end up with a harem of cute girls? These shows do have their more serious moments, but they're mostly lighthearted tales where the main character hangs out with local royalty, solving all their problems because he's more powerful than pretty much any opponent. After dealing with the occasional rampaging demon or dragon, the hero must face an ever greater challenge: how to divvy up his time amongst his haremettes!

Action Heroine Cheer Fruits
add

Brought together by their local council, a group of amateur performers is tasked with trying to promote their town. These comfy cute girls series have lot of hijinks as the groups try to find their own identity. Locodol has more emphasis on promotion aspect, while Cheer Fruits is more about the performance itself.

Kemono Friends
add

Cute animal people having cute adventures in a fantasy setting. While the antics are often playfully lighthearted, the world they live in is implicitly quite dangerous... but then there's an idol concert and who doesn't like idols? Anyway, Dog Days is lewd while Kemono Friends is not.

Sawashiro Miyuki as the evil princess who is going to bring despair to you all using the power of darkness! This is a fairly casual recommendation: Twilight and Victorias are very similar, but both shows have many things that have nothing to do with them.

Macross Δ
add

This series, brought to you by Kawamori Shouji and studio Satelight, begins when a plucky young girl with a can-do attitude runs away from home. Having been introduced to illicit pop music as a child, she's chasing after her dream of becoming an idol. While en route to the audition... and so and so forth... AKB0048 is heavily influenced by the Macross franchise (minus all those icky boys). In turn, Macross Delta feels inspired by AKB0048, tweaking and reusing its ideas within Macross canon. But long story short: AKB0048 is an idol series with a lot of mecha. Macross Delta is a mecha series with a lot of idols.

Mob Psycho 100
add

Fantastical allegories for male adolescence. These hilarious action series ponder the eternal question: What does it take to be cool and mature? As the protagonist encounters various authority figures, the story explores various possible answers through increasingly crazy battles. The main difference is that FLCL leaves the interpretation up to the audience. Mob Psycho 100 is very straightforward in its delivery.

Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou

Powerful monster girls trying to fit into human society resulting in misunderstandings over cultural differences and the occasional destruction of property. MonMusu is an ecchi harem with many monster girls while Squid Girl is a comedy about the titular character and an otherwise human cast.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!
add

Parodies of fantasy roleplaying adventures where the female party members are all comically flawed. The lead character is smart enough to realize how bad things are, but often just as bad. Both series feature a lot of sex based humour, albeit Bikini Warriors is a short and doesn't have much else where KonoSuba does.

Fantasy sporting harems where a former prodigy is roped into being a coach, mostly for a pink haired klutz with potential. However, where WalRoma is an ecchi series, AoKana is mostly just moe.

Being a hero looks glamorous but is tough and unrewarding. These comedy shorts parody RPG tropes and cliche.

If you liked

Momo Kyun Sword
add

Magical girl series whose crystal collecting main plot focuses more on the motivation of the antagonists than why the protagonists are trying to stop them. Fate and Onihime both have similar issues trying to gain the approval of their sole parent. Both contain quite a bit of fanservice, albeit Momo Kyun Sword is ecchi-centric whereas Lyrical Nanoha doesn't dwell on it.

Dog Days

Momo Kyun Sword
add

Fanservice filled action fantasy stories where the female cast tend to lose their clothing during battle in place of being injured. Both have simple stories that, if not for the rampant sexualization, would basically be kids shows. Where Dog Days focuses entirely on dog/catgirls, the titular character of Momo Kyun Sword fuses with her animal companions. Additionally, Eclair and Momoko have the same voice actress.
