Both showsdrive our attention towards the psychological tendencies of characters and their way of interacting with their environment. Each story takes place in a reclaimed territory (Youkoso -- Koudo Ikusei Senior High School, Kiznaiver -- Sugomori City), processing some kind of a special plan for advancing society (being world peace in Kiznaiver, and highly educated students with guaranteed university admission and employment in Youkoso). Consequently, the main setup of the plot are teenagers try to deal with the challenges and trials imposed on them from above by a powerful system. The main male characters resemble each other too. Those who enjoyed either of them apparently would like the other one, too.

Both stories are about a main character who was born with terrifying facial features, and gets treated badly by the world as a result. Deep inside, the main character is a sensitive soul who only wants to make some friends and find a "place to belong".

Sakamoto desu ga?

The series resemble each other in the fact that they are in fact the "opposite" of each other: While "Sakamoto desu ga" tells about a handsome guy who is skilled, cool, stylish and popular, (whilst all what he is doing for it is acting by his nature) anyone who ever tried to ruin it ended up raising his fame, "Watemote" tells about an absolutely uncool, quite dumb, freaky and unpopular girl, who, in contrast, does her best to improve her image - and become popular- with rather naive and witless attempts that, consequently, only make her more laughable. Both are comical slice-of-life shows that center on a single student's school life and his "social status" among his peers. They both lack a single plot line with each episode centering on new occasions in the main character's life.
