Look, I usually dont write reviews for animes, but after watching this, I felt that the least that I could do was write a "short" and decently spoiler-free review on this anime. This whole review is an objective review, and anything that's based solely on my feelings is marked otherwise.
Plot/story: 8
What would it feel like if someone you knew or loved had a predetermined lifespan, set down to the exact hour? How would it feel like counting down the hours that you have left with that person and making the best out of it? That is the whole basis behind the plot of this anime,
...
and I felt like it was done really well. The flow of the story is really amazing, and each episode helped me understand the world they lived in better, while also building really good character relationships (as described later in the characters section), this is one of the animes that didn't end on a cliffhanger every single episode, but still made me want to watch more of the anime. I've noticed that many people are looking for sci-fi merged with romance, but I can pretty much say that there isn't really a sci-fi aspect to this, so don't watch this anime expecting super cool sci-fi scenes and fights, but instead a very touching drama/love story.
Art: 9
I was pleasantly surprised by the art in this anime, especially the character designs and the settings. There won't be eye-melting animations and fight scenes as you'd expect from a sci-fi, (because this anime really isn't a sci-fi anime) but you can expect consistently good-looking characters, and stunning backdrops to go with it.
Music: 9
The opening, ed, and osts are among my favorites in anime. The songs aren't iconic as, let's say, hikaru nara or unravel, but they certainly are memorable, and leave an impact on the watcher as they progress through the series. They have their own unique feel, contrary to the many similar-sounding j-rock songs that you typically hear at the beginning of animes nowadays. One of the few anime openings and endings that I won't skip these days.
Characters: 10
I absolutely loved the characters and their development (particulary the main duo) throughout the anime. Characters such as the mean-looking but in reality, nice senior employee, Kazuki, and the light, carefree, player-like character of Yasutaka really helps liven up this anime and make it super fun to watch. The relationship between the main characters doesn't feel forced at all, and is probably the most accurate representation of a real-life relationship between two shy-ish characters who have never dated before. And unlike other animes, the buildup to their relationship was superb; unlike many animes where it is just one event that occurs that suddenly makes the main duo fall head over heels for each other, Plastic Memories has a well-done buildup to their relationship, through their terminal service partnership. Isla starts as kind of a Kanade Tachibana copy, but thankfully, becomes more than that, and develops the cute and lovable personality that we fell for.
Feels: 20/10
This whole anime was a massive rollercoaster of emotions. None of the emotions in the anime felt forced, and were genuinely built up through the plot and the main focus of the story: knowing that someone you love has a limited time to live, and you know that down to the hour. Towards the end, we all can see the ending from a mile away. We don't need a critical review to tell us that. In fact, i think its the fact that we did see the ending from a mile away that made it so emotional at the end. You know what the outcome is for the whole last episode, but it's how it got to the outcome that was done really well, and made it super emotional. I would like to say more, but that would mean spoiling the anime, and ruining the experience of watching it for everyone, so i'll hold back on that.
Feels Part 2: (basically my ranting corner you can ignore lol)
Needless to say, I cried. A lot. The last two episodes i was forcing myself to hold back my tears. In fact, this is the only sad anime that I've watched where I tried to force myself to not cry, but tears broke through my barrier anyways, and at the end, it was impossible to not let it all out. This anime honestly changed my feelings and actions towards my family, reminding me that every second spent with a loved one should be cherished.
TL:DR
If you're a casual anime fan, hardcore weeb or maybe just someone trying to get into anime, I'd highly recommend Plastic Memories. As long as you don't go into this anime looking to critisize the small amounts of plot error or flaw that this anime has, (and by small, I mean really small amounts that you wouldn't notice unless you were searching for them,) and just watch this anime wanting to enjoy it, this is a beautiful anime that will definitely pull on your heartstrings and your tear ducts. The characters are well-developed and lovable, and at the end of the day, is an amazing anime that is definitely worth watching or at the very least, worth giving a try.
