**Some Spoilers in the review**
I very rarely write reviews. I was compelled to write after successfully finishing what probably is my first ever Slice of life anime. If there are any burdens, worries or concerns you are carrying in your life, probably from your work/ school/relationships and are looking for a feel good show that is guaranteed to give you temporary relief and probably reevaluate your life, this is the show for you.
This anime is about a calligrapher who is a sensitive individual and has finished 2nd and is in
...
a state of depression, self hate and shame. He is sent off to an island by his family and business associate to recover and take some time off. The episodes are all pretty much about the protagonists' experience with the people and the beauty of that island, how it helps him in rejuvenating his mood. It all sounds like a simple narrative, but it was masterfully executed with loads of lighthearted comedy and precious moments of transcendence.
What I loved the most about this anime was how relatable the protagonist was to me and any grown up in general and how we can learn some things from this anime. We have a lot of things we worry about in life and if we think hard about it, most of these concerns (aside health of our loved ones) are materialistic. Goddamn, our priorities are often so backward. This anime has a subtle message to the viewers that life and world are too beautiful to be moping around or worried.
The protagonist by the end does not achieve the professional success he hopes to achieve at the beginning of the series. But he transforms into a person that is complacent with that result and is more about doing work he personally can appreciate. I am sorry if you weren't wanting to read this part. But watch the anime, his profession is only an accessory to the plot. The story is more about his experiences and maturing into a complacent individual with better priorities.
Two of the best anime I have ever seen are Space Brothers and Barakamon. I wish they made more anime like these where adults and youngsters have some life lessons in there. If you know some more of that sort, please recommend.
P.S.: I don't really grade art, sound and what ever other elements are usually listed out and graded separately by pros. This is 2014 ffs, almost every anime has watchable art compared to 20 years back.

MANLINESS OVER 9000!
MUST READ: "This anime is borderline hentai at times and I have seen quite a few diss this anime when it alternates from very serious moments to perverted ones. Some call these perverted moments as fanservice that disrupts flow of the show. Newsflash: Perversion and boobies are a major part of this anime. Unlike what many other reviewers say, it is not fanservice. It is the actual content of the show and reflects upon the innate nature of protagonist. Consider Fairy Tail for example, the boobies shown in that anime/manga are fanservice, because they add nothing to the events around them. This
...
series however, revolves around boobies about quarter of the time.
Despite what the name of the anime and image of protagonist wearing a weird helmet suggests, make no mistake, Sunabozu aka Desert Punk is one of the manliest anime there is. Truly it is one of the fewest masculine shows out there and when I say man, I mean an adult man, 20s and above. This is not to say that the younger ones wont appreciate it, but they wont empathize with the protagonist as much as somewhat older ones do. This is one of the manliest anime I have watched that does not include a Macho/Alpha male protagonist that powers up in the moments of distress and saves the world with his strength and idealism.
Now I am not the kind of elite reviewer who rates anime based on the animation, soundtrack, plot etc. I hate breaking things down and its just not my style, even though I have done that a couple of times in the past and failed miserably. So I will get to the point and keep things simple.
World: Desert Punk is set in a post apocalyptic world which comprises of deserts throughout the planet. Very similar to Trigun as far as the world goes. People now live with somewhat rudimentary technology and everything all the scientific breakthroughs before the apocalypse supposedly became inaccessible after the calamity. Currently there are one or several Governmental bodies who control majority of resources. Then you have the weak and poor desert folk who are scattered across the desert and barely survive. Our protagonist is a mercenary/freelancer that lives among poor desert people.
Protagonist: Protagonist is a hybrid of Vash and Gintoki from Gintama. He is extremely perverted, in fact half of his ambition revolves around boobies and women, which is why I say somewhat older males can empathize with him. He is similar to Gintoki in that he appears as stupid in general, but is very pragmatic and witty. The desert is all about survival of the fittest and the protagonist's cunning ways help him out-duel his opponents more often than not. He has pragmatic view about the world where he accepts the cruel fate of environment and weakness as it is and does his best to survive while not generally caring much about others around him. This is where I believe regular Shonen lovers will not like the protagonist as much, but such a character is closer to reality. A bunch of interesting characters are introduced as the anime goes on.
Plot: It starts out as having no plot and is episodic. The anime starts out very funny but somewhat weak in first two episodes, but becomes more and more entertaining as you progress. After 10 or so episodes you will realize that even though the anime to an extent is still episodic, there is some world building going on and greater things are about to come. The first half of the anime is different from the second half very much like Trigun where things get serious. Well in this one things do get serious, but there is still a lot of humor. Overall it has some elements of a coup at the very end which will keep the viewer very entertained.
I was able to empathize with the characters and found the story very entertaining. But it falls short of greatness because of one major reason. There is a major master-student bond formed between the protagonist and a main character, but there are no scenes that make us appreciate their bond because the protagonist almost comes off like a jerk who considers his student as a servant, but not as a protege. That emotional aspect is what makes good anime GRREAT and it was missing in this one.
I thoroughly enjoyed every second I spent on this anime, including the first few episodes as well which were inferior in comparison to rest of the series, but very entertaining in their own right. 8/10

I am not into Mecha genre. Most of the Mecha genre anime cater the audience of 12-18 age group and I do not belong there. I am more into seinen, I love matured stuff that is animated like Monster, Gungrave and Baccano. I also love shonen anime that are sensible like FMA, HxH and OP.
In the past I tried some Mecha and I just could not digest anything but Code Geass. See even if you have cool robots, you've got to have a strong storyline to actually keep mature audiences entertained. Code Geass had one. I saw the rating of 8.95 on this website
...
for TTGL and had high hopes for it, even if it was a Mecha that have fooled me before, I believed this one to be different. Boy was I fooled.
When you watch the first two episodes of TTGL you are absolutely thrilled with the story as it goes on. Two rebels among a society of compromised. The way things go, it would seem as if sky is the limit for their adventures, just like One Piece where sailing seems like the most wonderful thing ever since sliced bread. How ever I had to stop watching TTGL at 10th episode.
TTGL has a bit too much fun and very little substance in the plot. I cannot delve deep into the plot as I may end up writing spoilers, but the huge potential of anime was wasted on too many robots and little substance with the story. Since this is a small anime series unlike greats such as One Piece, there is too much battle in every episode and too little character development.
I don't understand how this anime is different from any other mecha for immature, I was fooled with the rating here. I know many will say this is shounen and I was supposed to watch it in the first place, sorry but HxH was shounen too and it had an epic storyline. TTGL is all about battles, if only they did not rush things and took it slowly by developing the plot I could have liked it.

If you are a fan of shonen anime like One Piece and Bleach that boil your blood, fan of innovative anime like Monster, Hunter X Hunter that makes you appreciate the time you spent, mystery like Full Metal Alchemist that drives you crazy, humor like Gintama that will make you rofl, THIS ANIME IS NOT FOR YOU.
This is one of the most overrated animes I have come across. Anyone that seriously has a passion for action/adventure anime will be fooled and disappointed with the ratings and genre.
Concept: 8/10
If there is anything good about this anime, it is the concept of the plot.
...
The story briefly is about an injured man with a wierd mask that is saved by the people of a small village, that man suffers with amnesia and that village quickly becomes his home. Because of his wisdom and kindness, he quickly becomes the leader and then his forgotten past begins to haunt him. The anime involves many war sequences, some strategies involved, loyalties, betrayals and violence. Sounds like a good concept for a action/adventure lover.
Enjoyment/Characters: 5/10
The director of the anime did come up with a good concept, but failed miserably in translating a good concept to enjoyment. I thought the potential of a very good concept was totally wasted.
The main character in the anime suits perfectly for this kind of story, the major problem is some of the characters that surround him. There is very little character development and everyone else just pops out of the blue, you will know very little about every major character of the anime by the time you finish.
The plot is purely for simpleminded people, trust me, there is NOTHING genius about this anime. It had little to no twists and turns in the plot, everything seemed predictable. There are NO scenes where you will be amazed, there are NO scenes where you will get fired up. The whole concept of war is made a joke.
There is no humor in the anime, some will say there is some, but that is for simpleminded ones. There is absolutely NO humor in the anime and the very little efforts of humor add to the problems.
Be prepared for some very annoying characters that are sadly major characters in the anime, a female girl named Eruru and her little sister Aruru. The main character of the series (Hakuoro) is looked upon as father by the little sister Aruru while the older sister Eruru loves him. In one of the middle episodes of the anime, Hakuoro tells publicly that Eruru is like his sister, yet Eruru continues to love him. There is excessive romance between Hakuoro and Eruru, by romance I mean situations that involve Eruru showing her love, but Hakuoro showing indifference to her love. I personally could not take a pseudo incest relationship, every episode will have some.
Then you have moronic scenes that do not make any sense. Eruru and Aruru care a lot about Hakuoro and will insist on accompanying him to the wars and he agrees. I am talking about roughly a 17 year old girl with no fighting skills that wants to stay close to her lover at any cost and a 8 year old girl that just does not want to stay away from her dad even for few hours. They both accompany him to wars where there is massive killing happening around them, hardcore I mean. These kind of situations will make you feel "I could have done a better job directing this".
The art was good for the most part, but the fight sequences could have been better.
By end of the day I did not learn anything from this anime, dropped watching a couple of times in middle and still picked up because I had nothing else to watch, ultimately repented for the time I invested.
