The high school boy put his hand on his best friend’s bare chest. The moment and other scenes with similar dynamics are the meat of the series. I do enjoy the core relationship and the mystery - there are some chilling visuals for good spooks at times - but everything beyond that is pretty bleak. The supporting characters are uninteresting, maybe one or two exceptions, but they also felt underdeveloped, and maybe I’m just not at the right age where I can find the one-eyed enigmatic antagonist “cool”. The major frictions to me are the revelations. As a story that revolves around a mystery, the

revelations in major story bits don’t feel earned. Things are revealed because they happen to encounter the exact person or enter the exact place, whether it’s a rarely-appeared father or never-mentioned childhood hideout. These stories in the genre certainly rely heavily on accidents and coincidences; however, they have to be designed in a way that the audiences can engage in the protagonists’ actions and desires, that the main characters do something so that things happen accordingly. An example for the poorly designed revelations is the village name thing. We barely knew the surrounding area besides it’s rural, it’s out-of-touch with authorities, and one of the mountains is creepily ominous. Wouldn’t it be great if we know more about the area before the big old putting-the-puzzles-together-and-lay-it-out scene? The manga performed poorly in this regard, but I’ll still look forward to the seemingly upcoming showdown, and the concluding chapter of this quasi-gay drama.
