First of all, everyone should watch this and second there needs to be a second season. I watched this on a youtube review recommendation. I haven't watched yuri on ice yet, but already on the first few episodes something within me was drawn to the premise: "You should not always be the one everyone is expected you to become." Fleeting from the status quo and doing something different most of the time is hard, and sticking with it through everyone's judgement, persecution and redicule is nothing short of brave. That is what you can witness in this show. If you've ever wanted to do something ... else, or have wanted to do something else in your life and you've didn't take the opportunity, if you had a dream you had to give up on because of reasons beyond your control, or just dreams you forgot about this show is for you. I guarantee it will tug at your heart strings. The breaking of gender roles and cultural barriers also plays a very key part in this story. It's well emphasized that society doesn't view ballet as being a manly/musculine thing, that's why the MC would feel restrained and awkward about wanting to do ballet eventhough in his heart it is what he wants to do, because it is far from the expectations of society.
The animation is also a thing of beauty, whenever they dance you can see their movement very clearly, 'the lines' of their bodies that from what I understand through watching this show is very important in ballet. And that's the thing, I wasn't even interested in ballet when I first came to watch this show. Maybe because it's more about the growth of the MC, the more he understands himself, being more true to his feelings, and also the people around him also change as he changes himself.

I liked the first episode, you can get hooked on the story, but I feel that there's no payout and you just get strung along, all the more because if one gets hooked at first they usually are eager for a 'happy' ending. I get that it's supposed to be about separation and how people move away from each other as time passes, trying to be realistic, like 'it is what it is' kind of vibe, but c'mon, it's not because of feelings or certain circumstances, IT IS THE TRAINS FAULT! In this, they are kind of that one annoying friend who always gets ... in the way of you doing something important and makes it about them always. Trains are used as a plot mechanism too often and too obviously. Because of this I hated trains. Trains number one c#ck blocker. All trains should die.
