It took awhile for this movie to be out in Cinemas. Not even mentioning BluRays and DVDs as this movie is not shown in my local cinemas. However the wait for this movie was TRULY (REALLY TRULY) worth the wait. Here is my review:
Story (10/10):
A BIG note to all who plans to watch this movie before the two anime seasons. Don't. References to the previous two seasons are present in this movie and WILL confuse you if you did not see the episodes.
A few sentences of the story (trying my best to keep spoilers away): The world mysteriously changes in a single night, leaving only
...
Kyon remembering the old world. Everything in this world changes, including the memories of the S.O.S. members being together and Haruhi's powers. Kyon goes through a LONG (yes it was long, only part I didn't like) period of shock. Here on, the adventure to return back to his original world begins.
The thing changed about this movie and the anime is that the character development is now more evident. Here we focus on the feelings of Kyon on how he feels about his life along with Nagato. Best part, the Shakespeare's concept of a struggle with decisions. "To be or not to be". However I am not gonna spoil the movie here and tell you who makes the decision and what was the decision. It is for you to watch :).
This story has many plot twisting moments, along with still funny moments and sad scenes. That gives the Comedy-Drama genre for this anime. Some parts of the movie gives a very big suspense leaving you for more, but some parts are just not exactly needed although it gives you a sense of development and feelings for Kyon (the long part where you see him in shock). They even silence the scene to give a suspense as to what is the person actually saying and will reveal it later. True, it's a cliché method but it is effective. 2 hours and 40 minutes movie, the plot will definitely keep you in with a little feel of skipping here and there if you are watching it on a disk like me.
Surprisingly, here is a small little spoiler. Time traveling is inside this movie but it leads me to this point. Even though stories that include time travel which jumps from present to past and so on can be very messy. This was so perfectly done in this movie and that is what makes Kyoto Animation famous for. Their sense of story stays comprehensible.
Overall, story was great. MUCH better than the TV series and SO much more interesting than the endless eight arc which wasted 25*8 minutes of my life in the 2009 season.
Artwork (9/10):
Kyoto Animation never fails to amuse me. Watching all the animes from them is extremely satisfying. For the artwork for this one. I can tell it is distinctively better than the TV series due to the fact it is meant to be on the big screen and more HD for patrons to enjoy. CGI was great too.
Sound (9/10):
Some of the sounds are from the original series itself, not much new OST. I love how the music is extremely appropriate for each particular scene. I feel that the people behind this anime spent quite some time on this to enhance the feelings that they want to portray to us by using music.
Particularly, I love the ending song. The only-vocal song made my heart sank even more rather than a music to be played along with it. It denotes the end (hopefully not, but it seems like it) of the Haruhi Suzumiya series :(.
Characterization (9/10):
Like I said in the story part, character development is VERY strong in this movie. Especially to Kyon and Nagato about their true feelings. However more focused on Kyon still like the TV series. Almost all the characters that speak play a major role in the anime, removing one will remove a big element to the story and some might even destroy the whole plot. I love how they did not put any useless characters inside this to fill up the story.
Enjoyment (10/10):
Loved it. Like every single anime released by Kyoto Animation (Clannad, Air, etc), the emotions their animes try to portray to me are more distinctive than other animes that has the drama genre. This 2 hours and 40 minutes of my life was not wasted and it was worth going through this ride with the movie. I will continue to support this producer.
Overall (9/10):
Good job Kyoto Animation :)! You never fail to disappoint me other than the endless eight arc in the 2009 season.
If you haven't caught this movie yet, do it! Make sure to finish the TV series first! Best to rewatch the TV series as some parts might be forgotten as when I watched this movie, I finished the TV series (including 2009) on the 2009 itself and forgotten some of the story xD. But it came back during the movie.
