Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World
|
Theme of the journey, whereby the MC travels from place to place and helps people along the way; episodic; minimal background music/sounds; monotonous, expressionless MC; beautiful art (more so in Mushishi) and beautiful music (more so in Kino); general quiet, serene, & sleepy atmosphere. The only difference is Kino is more philosophical, explores the human condition, and is full of life lessons, whereas Mushishi is supernatural, explores the paranormal, and is full of mindfreaks.

Both feature socially awkward female leads who end up getting themselves into embarrassing situations. The difference is that, though both Tomoko and Sunako can't seem to handle being in social situations, Tomoko wants to be popular but fails miserably while Sunako wants to be left alone yet somehow manages to get a lot of attention. If Watamote left you unsatisfied then YNSH should provide more comfortable resolution.

Both are about a group that wants to become famous in the music scene. Both are also set in a technologically advanced world with mixed sci-fi and fantasy elements as well. They also feature great upbeat music in each episode. Cute, lively, comical, sparkly, and motivational in some ways, watching these two will definitely leave a smile on your face :)

Neither the stories nor the settings are similar but the main characters give off the same vibes. Shirou acts like Light: organized, proper, and uptight. No maniacal laughs though. He also takes issue with the L-like Kurokichi. Kuro is weird, mysterious, "all-knowing", somewhat impartial and aloof, just like L. He even has dark circles underneath his eyes and also has a kind of food fetish (milk in Kurokichi's case) Ririko looks like Misa with the hairstyle and gothic outfit. She's also pretty useless. Same thing. The characters of Shirokuro Kitan might as well have been copy-pasted from Death Note, otherwise heavily influenced by it. It's too suspicious. Overall there's a dark ambiance around both of these manga titles. I suggest you read Shirokuro Kitan with the Death Note characters' voices, it makes the reading experience so much more awesome.
