Goodbye, Shinji Ikari. Rei Ayanami. Asuka Langley. Misato Katsuragi. Goodbye, all of EVANGELION.

My all time favourite anime, since i first watched it to now, Evangelion is special to me. I wrote my EE on it, i’ve lectured about it, i’ve studied it, i know all the history, i’ve dedicated so much time to it. Whereas the original end to evangelion was a lengthy descent into madness, a bitter end to the saga, this is its positive inflection. the rebuilds to me have always been a continuation of the main series , the universe reset to try again… except this time Shinji got up. Asuka refused ... to be broken. Rei found herself.

This movie is one of a kind. it’s structure is messy but that’s so typical of Eva at this point. It lets us live and breathe with these characters for a while, pushing on… life keeps on going, it keeps on living.

I’m not going to get into shipping debates, i’m glad they confirmed the original’s romantic subtexts in more ways than one. the original ended with a hateful act of love on a beach, the rebuilds end with life continuing on. Shinji is finally ready to push himself to find happiness.

Technical elements were all outstanding - animation was revolutionary, great music and voice acting, exceptional direction and writing. Fantastic work all around. A cinematic triumph that this unbashed vision managed to be made successfully.

This one hits the feels too, especially for a long term and dedicated fan, where it adds to the lore extensively and confirms many subtextual hints and theories.

It ended on a happy note. Anno can finally say goodbye, he’s grown and so has EVA. He’s finally able to move on , Shinji is finally able to live his life. Asuka , Rei, Kaworu get a shot at normal lives.

This was more of a rant but alas. The film is hard to understand and i’m still processing but i’m confident in the rating. An epic emotional conclusion to my favorite anime of all time.

Christmas in July, maybe?
Wickedly funny, supremely heartfelt and emotional, with awesome character writing, even for the side characters who only appear for a scene or too. Solid music, exceptional writing, and although it has weaker visuals than all of Kon's other works, it is still really strong overall with a great message and themes. Oh, and I cried like twice. It was really emotional, and although the theme of family it explores is nothing new, it did it masterfully. I love how it feels like such a world, with characters who overlap and every corner feeling lived in and inhabited by someone. All around great ... stuff, and I'm glad I binged the films of this master of the arts.

An absolutely stunning rumination on life, death, movies and growing old. The power we place in the art we absorb and sometimes, the art we push ourselves into doing. The power we place in our memories, as subjective as they may be, and as tainted by our lifelong quests as they become. The power of growing old and remembering everything that made us ... us... in the first place. Stunning surrealism and animation mixes to create a masterwork of powerful emotional relevance. I loved every aspect of this film, all the characters, the stories, the presentation, the whole thing.

But at the end, watching it was ... the part I loved most.

This was certainly something special. It has its own logic and follows it to a tee, and whether you understand it deeply effects your experience of the film. The animation, music, voice acting, etc were all absolutely superb, and the visual presentation was out of this world (ha ha). I loved most of it, although I feel like it was very very dense. My rating may go up with time and or another viewing. Otherwise, it was a master class in direction, with great character writing. Every motivation was pretty well thought out and I bought the relationships between the core cast. Overall, very ... good! Also, credit your inspirations next time, Christopher Nolan, or else you are committing plagiarism.

I am a filthy, dirty digimon fan and have been since I was a kid. I know that inherently, this is probably a bad movie if you aren't a fan. But is meant for the fans who have been here since the start. I watched the movie first, in '08, then the original adventure, adventure 02 and tamers. This was built for me. I cried, I laughed, I yelled in shock, I shouted about my waifu Kari and my husbando TK. Quality content all around. I enjoyed every minute, and that is in the end, what matters. No matter how high-brow my anime tastes get, ... I will always enjoy this. Goodbye, Original Digidestined, and the 02 cast. You made my childhood, and growing up with you was astounding.
