The sports anime 'Yuuri!!! on Ice' is a new addition to the plethora of sports anime out there. At the time of airing it's extremely popular with both those in the anime community and 'beginners' in anime. Here's my take on it.
Story: 7/10
In my eyes, most sports anime story lines come off as generic, to say the least. And I'm saying that as a person who really likes the genre. With YOI, however, I saw something a little bit different, though it follows the same basic outline as other sports shows. In short, it's Yuuri's journey to try
...
and win some sort of national ice skating competition coached by Victor who Yuuri has been a complete fanboy of for ages. I like how it's very relevant and most of the people who watch it can relate to Yuuri. Not only is the show funny and at some times quite bizarre it can be very serious at times. The pacing of the show is not bad, though I think I'd like to see more of Yuuri's practice sessions. The story's pretty solid overall, though it's the other elements of the show that make it really shine.
Art: 8/10
I really enjoyed the art in the show, for the most part. Firstly, the opening theme art was beautiful. It was cinematic, subtle and fit the mood of the whole show which I thought was done very well. Art in the show was above average for sure - there was detail in all the right places and I didn't have any problems with it. The only real art problem, as I'm sure many are aware, was the actual skating animation(ironic, it being a skating anime)which had some under done parts. The skating tended to be quite choppy which could have been fixed possibly with a bigger budget. However, it's bearable, so don't let that put you off the whole show.
Sound: 9/10
The sound in the show is on the whole great. It always fits the moment and is well chosen for the genre it's based on. It's very uplifting and compliments any scene it's put in. The theme music for each skater fitted their personalities. I didn't like some of the skating tracks, but that's overshadowed by the sheer brilliance of the other ones.
Character: 8/10
Though some of the characters were quite unforgettable, some really shone. There's quite a cast since there's lots of people skating and it seemed like the show wanted you to remember everyone, which of course was impossible. However, they delivered well on lots of aspects in characters, mainly the main characters Yuuri and Victor. Of course, extremely memorable characters, well designed, likeable personalities, etc. What I found quite interesting was the LGBT route tackled in the show. I'm extremely glad that the show does not lose touch of the fact that it is a sports anime. It'd be very easy to leave all the ice skating behind and turn this whole show into a giant yaoi fest, but gladly it does not(though I do enjoy a bit of yaoi now and again). It's very interesting and is one of the reasons I actually picked up the show, though I won't say too much so you can enjoy it yourself. But yes, lots of diversity and memorable people there for you to enjoy whose characters are quite well developed.
Enjoyment: 9/10
Oh, how I loved Wednesdays. I'd sit in my chair, counting down till Crunchyroll posted that fateful episode. Though the show had little flaws, and wasn't my favourite show in the universe, it was certainly exciting, keeping me entertained every week and giving me lots to talk about with those who had seen it. I really did enjoy it.
Overall: 8/10
I could overlook the flaws in this show just because it was great. It showcased well the comedy, drama and romance that comes with ice skating competitively and infatuated me in something that I may have not been interested in before. Well done, Yuuri!!! on Ice.
