It's surprising how these two series share similar themes although Karneval is all ~*colour and sparkles*~ on the surface while Tokyo Ghoul is very dark since the very beginning. Here are the similarities I can find. Some details I have left out due to spoilers, especially for Karneval: -Human eating monsters with weird eyes, special powers and regeneration abilities: Varuga and Ghouls -Special cells in monster biology that increases power: Incuna and RC cells -Government organisation of humans that fight monsters: Circus and CCG -Organisation’s modified weapons that imitate monster powers: Circus Incuna bracelets and CCG's quinques -Evil organisation made up of monsters: Kafka and Aogiri Tree -Heartbreaking arcs that question the alignments of monsters and humans: Yotaka/Tsubame arc + Promise of Tomorrow story and Hinami arc + Anteiku’s ghouls in general -Half-monster protagonist that becomes this way due to experimentation: Kaneki and (not revealing the Karneval one because it's a spoiler. please read Chapters 62-63 first.) Generally there's less drama in Karneval, but it can get as dark and gritty as Tokyo Ghoul when it wants to. So it's great if one wants a differently paced kind of series but still wants fighting and horror.
