Both are refreshing modern romance stories that touch on realistic expectations about first loves and high school relationships. Both subvert shoujo stereotypes and clichés that make for very funny and heart-warming stories. Character design is similar as well (quieter dark-haired boy and upbeat light-haired girl). Character development is stronger in Horimiya, even with its supporting characters. Mairimashita, Senpai has a more sensual tone.
