Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Part 7: Steel Ball Run is the seventh story arc of the Japanese manga series Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, written and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki.

Summary: Set in the United States in 1890, it stars Johnny Joestar, a paraplegic former jockey who desires to regain the use of his legs, and Gyro Zeppeli, a disgraced former Neapolitan executioner who seeks to win amnesty for a child on Death Row. They, along with others, compete in a titular cross-country horse race from San Diego to New York for the chance to win $50,000,000 dollars, but they find themselves targeted after discovering the dark motive of ... the race’s creator, Steven Steel, and an unknown, even more sinister, enemy.


Critique:

The artwork is fantastic, really showcasing Hirohiko Araki’s command of his unique and (sometimes flamboyant), art style. The story is masterfully executed and (in my opinion), stands as the best Jojo part, AND one of the best manga ever created. The characters are all superbly written and intriguing, with some of my favorite characters coming out of this part. The story is thrilling and keeps you hooked the whole way through, adding to my love of the series.

The Stand abilities are unique in the way that they don’t usually function like Stands, (for those who don’t know what Stands are, they are a sort of physical manifestation of your spirit energy that only other “Stand Users” can see and interact with. Each Stand is unique and they all have different attributes. Users can control their Stands, but they all have limits to their range and fighting power),but instead function as more of a superpower or a special ability.

The series takes place over the course of 94 chapters, and is a fantastic read from beginning to end.

It’s a really good manga and is one of the first I ever read.

The plot is well thought-out and the characters are pretty well-written. The ending is controversial, and not everyone will be content with it. A unique story for sure.

Art: 8/10 The art style is at first quite rough around the edges, but that adds to the general feeling of unease and suffering that permeates the surroundings.

Characters: 8/10 Well written characters with interesting motives and backgrounds.

Story: 9/10

Overall: 9/10 Definitely worth the read. Would recommend to new fans if they enjoy a gory plot and intense confrontations.
