Long story short: GREAT series! Had a lot of fun watching it, and you probably will, too! There is absolutely nothing you could lose in watching a short comedy series about monsters living in an apartment together.
Story was really fun! There have been changes from the original comics, but overall I think these changes were for the best! There is a now a small hint towards an actual plot and a complication that the characters are kind of heading towards, and a climax has been hinted at for maybe next season! clever and humorous interactions between the characters, it does not progress the plot much outside of a couple of scenes mostly at the beginning and very end of the series. The ending of this season being a cliffhanger left me a little disappointed, despite being completely in love with everything else-- if a more concrete ending had happened the story would've been rated 10. Needless to say, I am more than stoked for the next season!
The art is lovely and cute! Super consistent and never wavers in quality which is a great thing to see! Couldn't look away!
(The style has been changed from the original comics, but I think it added a lot to the story and honestly made it very fun to watch!)
Sound is nothing to write home about, but also nothing to complain about. Opening is an ABSOLUTE BANGER!
Characters are simply adorable! The story is very much driven by their interactions, and because they are so unique and have interesting dynamics, it made for a really good story! I think there is something for everyone to relate to or at least recognize in there!
(for those who are fans of the comic, some characters' back stories have been changed (namely the werewolf), and Neil is slightly cuter and he is kind of pushed to be more "pure" than he was in the comics. Some characters were also completely omitted, though they might make appearances in future seasons based on official art that has been released. I didn't mind most of these changes since they were minor and made the show more fun for me to watch, but it is something to note.)
I thoroughly enjoyed this series! I personally really enjoy shorts, and as someone who started reading the comics recently, I also think the short episodic approach that was taken resembles and stays true to the overall feel of the comic, making it a super enjoyable watch for anyone who does or does not read the comics! The story is funny, the characters are super unique and interesting, character interactions are truly wholesome and drive the plot so well, and the animation is something you just can't take your eyes away from!
Overall, this series probably sits at a 9, but in my heart it sits at a whole 10!
