Stylistic shows of criminal/con artist thematics, both of which have an enjoyable cast while the jazzy soundtrack accompanies it. Try the other if you like one of these shows for sure!

Upon finishing Koukaku Kidoutau it instantly reminded me of Serial Experiments Lain. Both explore dystopias where society has a heavy reliance on the network, along with similar cyberpunk atmospheres. The female leads are strong-willed women who are in a way (or become), cyborgs. Both animes have withstood the test of time and can be recognised as sci-fi classics to this day.

Both animes feature an earthquake situation, where two siblings fight for survival throughout natural disasters. Although they sound strikingly similar, I feel Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 to be better developed than Japan Sinks 2020 because of its character depth. Japan Sinks 2020 characters felt brushed off with poor writing to the exception of some well-done scenes. As a Masaki fan, I love his bizarre premises and being able to evoke human nature but I do feel as if the character writing here was one of his weaker works.

Both animes are about shoujo FL who get affiliated to a spirit ML, their relationships bonded through a contract. While watching both of them you'll notice similar relationships found between both pairs, where the FL will slowly fall for the ML through enjoyable rom-com scenarios. Both FL also assist other spirit entities through their journeys together!

Animes that are based on self-discovery where main characters overcome the obstacles in their lives. Both have beautiful animation with characters who you can project yourself onto, bonding with their relatable experiences. Koe no Katachi is centred around the main character whilst Flavours of Youth is a collection of stories. If you enjoyed one of these two you'll be sure to enjoy the other.

The world-building gives me similarities in the atmosphere, a world in which even the eccentric are normalised. Both shows give off the same positive vibes despite the characters faced in a world of dystopian madness. Definitely recommend checking the other if you liked one of these two!
