I honestly went into this anime expecting to hate it. I began watching it whilst doing work, but I soon found myself inexplicably drawn in- the characters are fairly two dimensional, Suzui who exists to narrate the show and be Jabami's foil is forgettable- and most of the cast are pretty, for lack of better word, meh. The sound design was alright, the music was alright, the art was alright; but somehow it came together to create something very fun!
I was initially put off by the amount of close up shots to crazed expressions shown within the first 5 minutes of the show, and saw
...
it as a bit of a not-very-well-done homage to Death Note. The first episode is a lot, but the further I went in the less I thought "this is dumb" and just enjoyed myself. It really did seem like Kill La Kill, but done in a less horrifically sexist fashion.
There's a huge cast of girls, but they really don't serve as a harem or romantic interest for the males in the show! Everyone's shown on pretty equal footing, and Suzui's ends up serving as a self insert for those watching- but not in a way that it disrupts the show. He could not exist and the story and character arcs would be exactly the same. Of course there's a bunch of female characters in sexy poses and so on, but it's shown less as "isn't this hot?" and more, "these people are nuts, right?".
Anyway, it's a good anime to watch to pass the time, but it's not particularly deep or enigmatic. It's a fun show that know's what it is, and y'know what? That's really what we need sometimes.
