Going into Goblin Slayer I wasn't expecting perfection, but I had high hopes that the masses would finally have picked an anime to worship for the season that wasn't dreadfully boring or a slice of life. Needless to say, I expected too much.
MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD
Story: 3
Completely uninspired, it's as if Fairy Tail and The Seven Deadly Sins were thrown into a blender, but without any of the charm. The story follows Goblin Slayer, an adventurer that is more likely than not a high functioning autist that, as his name suggests, focuses on slaying goblins. You might expect for there to be some extraordinary reason for

it but the most you'll get out of the series is "they killed my family." Come on guys, M. Night Shyamalan could write a better backstory than this.
Art: 5
I'm not rating the art poorly because it isn't well made, I'll say that it looks above average, but in the fantasy genre of anime is has no qualities that make it stand out. Medieval getups, mages, goblins, you name a generic fantasy trope and Goblin Slayer has it.
Sound: 7
Nothing great but the sound and music was decent. My only complaint is the gross goblin noises you hear every 5 seconds.
Characters: 3
I haven't seen such poorly written characters in anime before. None of them serve any purpose other than to get a chuckle or two out of the audience. Lizard man likes cheese. Old dwarf is a drunk. Healer girl is innocent. Elf girl is bossy and hot tempered. Goblin Slayer is most likely a sociopath. All of the characters are so forgettable that I've already forgotten their names, and I only just finished the last episode about 10 minutes ago.
Enjoyment: 5
I'll be honest, I'm pretty easily entertained when it comes to anime. I'm not a big complainer overall and am usually satisfied after finishing a show. Often times, though, it felt like story arcs would go on much longer than they should have (I'm looking at you, blind priestess) and it was tedious to go through. Action sequences were decent though. Predictable, but decent.
Overall: 4.6
Goblin Slayer thought it was something bigger and better than it really was. It made headlines with its debut episode and anime YouTubers saying it was going to be the next Berserk. The show has nothing that makes it stand out and if you haven't seen it yet, don't waste your time. I hate closing on a negative note though, so I'll say that Goblin Slayer could possibly redeem itself in the second season.
