Disappointing. The anime adaption does not live up to the manga, and it fails to communicate with color and sound what the original artist could do easily in black and white. Very, very many characteristic scenes were deleted in the anime, probably because the director thought they "weren't important", but those small scenes were necessary for character development.
One of my biggest disappointments was how the anime failed to express the "animalistic glare" that we saw so clearly in the manga. This really shouldn't have been that hard to do, especially since we know very well what is possible in the anime adaption world. As

Aesthetically very beautiful, but storyline basically incoherent. Takahata changes the traditional storytelling of the Kaguya-hime myth, but he doesn't go anywhere with it. It doesn't seem to be a faithful retelling of the old story, because there's many elements that are vulgar and modern. There basically is no morality in the story, either, and it's not clear where the story is trying to go. Kaguya doesn't really seem to grow that much, and the theme of "women's social oppression" is not expressed in an interesting way.
Some individual scenes, on their own, are very good. The movie is probably best enjoyed as a collection of clips ... |
