Both have a very creepy and other-worldly aura to them and are animated to look like a puppet play with dolls. If you like one, you'll probably like the other.

Both have large casts of incredibly fleshed out and deep characters that anyone can relate to. Give it enough time and you'll fall in love with each and every single one of them. Some other similarities are their expressive animation, themes of positivity and overcoming personal struggles, and a whimsical nature that's sure to have you fully immersed.

Ongaku

While neither have a lot of immediate similarities at a surface level, both were created almost single-handedly by one person and that unwavering sense of love and passion shine through here. Both of these movies could've only turned out the way they did since they had one talented creator behind them and they're better films partially because of that.

Kaitou Saint Tail

Magical girl romps with lots of athletics, cute characters, and hints at romance here and there. Both are semi-episodic, but never grow tiring. The overall look and feel are also pretty similar, with Saint Tail being almost like a cross between Cardcaptor Sakura and Magic Knight Rayearth in its aesthetics. You will cry. You will be at the edge of your seat. But most importantly, you'll laugh and have tons of fun with both!

Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch

Both are idol shows from the early '00s with rather similar art styles and overall feel. You don't even need to have nostalgia for these series to get that warm feeling of childlike wonder and joy, and that's partially what makes them so great and fun to watch! Mermaid Melody is generally a bit more lighthearted than Full Moon, although; both still have plenty of character drama. Watch Mermaid Melody if you're in the mood for something sunny and silly, and watch Full Moon if you wanna go on an emotional rollercoaster.

Paniponi Dash is like Lucky Star but on crack. Both shows have references up the wazoo and it's a great time trying to spot every minor detail. Lucky Star is generally a bit more laid back in tone while Paniponi Dash is wild and hyperactive. I still think that if you like one, then you'll like the other as well.

1001 Nights
|
1001 Nights specializes in the surreal and will make you feel like you're tripping hard on acid during its short, but sweet 24 minute runtime. It featues three different animation styles: regular cell animation, sketch animation on paper, and these weird motion tween moments, and it all looks incredible. Tenshi no Tamago features a lot of dark, gothic architecture and symbolism. The movie has little to no dialogue and is very slow but still manages to draw you into its world with its amazing character design and beautiful background art. Oh, and the music is really freaking good. If you're an art maniac looking for something that's a bit more "out there" with its art direction, then both of these are a MUST watch! Oh, both are also made by the same character designer behind a lot of the Final Fantasy games: Yoshitaka Amano!

These are some of the most bizarre, disgusting, and stomach turning anime you will ever see! Both feature some incredibly dark and sensitive themes that's sure to make most viewers feel incredibly uncomfortable. Shoujo Tsubaki has gained quite the notoriety in recent years due to multiple Youtubers making videos on it and because it's readily available on Youtube. Dokushin Apartment is a lot more obscure and harder to find but you should totally try and track it down if you're interested in seeing just how weird and explicit anime can get!

Both are sure to make you laugh with tears in your eyes if you dig the "so bad it's good" factor that comes with bad voice acting! Just make sure to avoid the Japanese versions like the plague.

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon
|
Both shows feature main characters with really mundane lives, but soon enough they happen to find themselves in a situation where they have to live with some kind of supernatural non-human creature who wants to be their maid! Both Mahoromatic and Kobayashi feature some sort of sex appeal. But while Kobayashi is generally more cutesy in classic KyoAni fashion; Mahoromatic is a bit more "explicit" to say the least (it has full on nudity in some scenes!) That's not to say that Kobayashi doesn't also have its fair share of sexy characters, but it's way more PG. Kobayashi felt very inspired by Mahoromatic. If you like one of them, I'm sure you would like the other!
