It's shocking to think this anime has existed for five years, and I only now heard of it, but this is one of these anime that are better seen late than never, because Anohana is a poignant and emotional examination of grief and how it affects and manifests in different people. It's honest, real and doesn't hold back the punches, making it a viewing experience you wouldn't want to miss.
The beautiful story follows five friends who have grown apart since one of them past away tragically. Only now that friend's spirit is back, and in order to allow her to find peace in the
...
afterlife they must grant her wish. Of course, this is easier said than done, as first they need to believe in her existence, come to terms with their own feelings on her death, and discover what that dying wish might be.
Throughout the anime, the portrayal of the friends, their lives, and the way they have dealt with their grief and guilt is honest, raw, and consistent; they each have their own unique personality and react accordingly throughout their individual journeys, making you honestly believe these people exist. Even if they're "only" animated characters. This, to me, is the sign of a really excellent show.
Accompanying this whirlwind of emotions and feels are the animation and soundtrack. The animation is flowing, smooth and each character's design and their surroundings fit who they are and is well thought of. At times, it simply beautiful.
The music is more often than not soft and gentle, yet it never fails to make us feel what the scene should; whether it be tension, sadness or hope. I've got to admit I simply adore the soundtrack to this anime - it's one of the rare shows where I watched every ending theme simply so I could drown in the music.
I honestly can't recommend this series enough. It has everything an anime needs to have; a story that can easily make you tear up but still have you smile and laugh with the characters throughout, animation and soundtrack that enhance the effect and characters that jump off the screen with how real they are.
I enjoyed every second of this anime and finished it in one sitting.
