When we want to watch something, make sure to read the rating, tags and sypnosis first. Because it's crucial for someone to know what to expect from the show that one is going to watch about. If it's mystery with an 8, then expect something good. If it's an action with a 7 rating, then don't put your expectation too high nor too low. Have a standard for every genre, and about you'll get disappointed or not, it's a later problem.
Don't be scared to look at the rating + sypnosis, and have an expectation. Because if it's an 8/10 rating but feels like a 6/10
...
or 7/10... then you deserve to be disappointed. Write a review for your thought in an objective light, and give an objective break down and explanation for the new watchers. If someone in the fandom gets mad at you, then (if possible) try to have a civil convo in order to get/give more knowledge and point of views for the series..
Now going to the review, I think Spy x Family is one of the best sol-comedy anime has offered. Sure, I haven't watch much, but this just feels like "the one" for me. It has the aspects in a wholesome show that I'm looking for. The people who gives a low rating is either:
1. Tricked by the rating and hype from the fandom
2. Because of the rating, they expect a ground-breaking plot/character from this anime
And I don't blame them. If you've been around the anime fandom for a while, you'll know that an 8 rating is high for both anime and manga.. so a 9 is god-like. So I get where you came from. But proofing my rant above right, you need to look at the tags (and prob reviews) first. This is action/comedy (base from the tags), so expect action with comedy in it. Though it does lay down to comedy and slice-of-life more than action, and base from the first ep, you'll know that.
By using the comedy and sol anime standard, this anime has quite a high rating from me.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Character (8/10):
It's nothing mind-blowing, or anything that change the whole comedy genre of anime, but it's a correct yet lighter depiction of how someone born in the war times act, and we'll get a development in that part.
In one episode, we know Anya, Loid and Yor's character core. And personally, I think that giving the audience clear knowledge about your characters bases is genius, especially in a show like this. Because we don't need a masterpiece of characters, all we need is a simple, yet realistic, and develop it more from there.
And what did Spy x Fam do? Did it sticks with the foundation they set up?
Yes they did. And that's the reason why I give it an 8/10. Mind you, I will not rate an 8 for the character if this is not in the comedy/sol category, but like I said, you need to have a standard for every genre in order to rate it right without any personal bias. Comedy shows relies on comedy, fantasy relies on lore + world-building, psychological relies on philosophy and (insert) nature = a good character is very much needed, so rate wisely. I have a great leniency when it comes to comedy, as comedy is not a show that we should take seriously (different than sol, action, adventure, etc). Thus, if you later want to rate it base from your own subjective view, then go ahead, but give a warning first.
Story (7.5/10)
The story only set as a base for the whole show. It never actually touch the subject and dive deeper, and in standard view, I'll prob give this a seven at most, but because of the comedy (and as a comedy show), this is good. It gives the audience a good clashing of the characters and subject, as they both went against each other.
In episode one and two, we've know this much about Loid: He's a victim of war and was robbed away his childhood. Loid wants to make sure that it will never happen to any child, thus why he became a spy. One day, he got a mission to exactly stop the war, so it's an opportunity plus a challenge that Loid never face (as an adult).
For Yor, she's someone who lost her parents since childhood (prob also because of the war), and has to raise her and her brother Yuri by herself. And from what we've seen, we haven't heard anything about someone giving/helping them (the government giving them support for example). So Yor really is on herself. Thus she takes on a extreme job in order to do that= became an assassin.
This assassin job is something that Yor has from her childhood to now, adulthood. And it shows from how Yor (knowing or unknowingly) develop some sort of double facade. One, the facade she shows to her victims, and the other is a facade she only show to her family + other people. This show that Yor has been trained since childhood, and is raised that way by probably her boss.
But then came Anya, a direct representation/example of both Yor and Loid's actual goal. Yor's goal is not "to kill people for a greater good", but is to give a good life for her brother, Yuri. Sure it will grow into that path, but it's not her number one motivation. For Loid, it's not for actual world peace, but world peace so that his robbed childhood (that is caused by war) will never happen to other children. So now, Yor need to balance her assassin life and mother life for Anya. One thing, Yor's life is cold (?) ever since her brother grew up, but Anya is like a remembrance of her brother (the warm). So as you can guess, Anya is able to relive her happy times in her childhood, and make Yor walk pass her lonely adult-hood. Because Yuri is a representation of Yor's humanity, and her assassin life oppose to that. This process will make Yor more "human" rather than the cold-blooded killer she's mold to be.
Going to Loid, for someone who takes on his spy career very seriously (shown in eps one), Anya will challenge that as someone who is a direct symbolism of his goal.
Yeah, sorry it became so long, but I hope you get the point I'm trying to make.
Sound and animation (8/10)
No Demon Slayer or Fate, but it's above average. We can expect from WIT and Cloverwork.
Pacing (7/10)
Eh kinda shaky on this point. It's a bit too slow, but nothing extreme like One Piece. This show relies on it's comedic side quite a lot, so prepare for that.
Personal enjoyment (9/10)
It feels like a 10 minute episode each time I watch it. I'm not lying. I have my fun with Anya's cuteness and Yor + Loid development.
Overral (8/10)
(7/10 if use normal standard)
This is hella good for a comedy-sol anime. It has heart-touching moments, and have action scenes to balance it. But like I said above, it lays more to the comedy side.
So now, hope you know what to expect from this, and experience my experience while watching this. Good luck!

Idk why, but I think a lot of people (or at least people in the website I watch anime from) judges this just because it's not your typical OP mc isekai with harem anime.
So I'll give you a warning now, if you expect a over-powered mc with harem and fanservice, then this anime is not for you. There's barely male characters here, and from what I've seen so far, I think this will be a GL anime. So if you like this genre, then you mostly won't be disappointed.
