Angel Beats! was a ride. I loved it from start to finish. The perfect blend of high school comedy slice-of-life and supernatural action character drama. And I did not expect it to be this sad. Or as funny as it was at some points.
Story: 7
The story was as well-written as it could be in my opinion. It did often suffer the curse of having to throw things in at inopportune times rather suddenly, and thus I felt confused at certain points, however it didn’t detract from the overall quality.
Minor spoiler: After episode 7 a certain something feels wasted. Won’t say what it is because

spoilers baby.
The biggest problem with the story (and arguably the show itself) is it’s shortness. Angel Beats! is only 13 episodes long, which has rarely turned out to be a benefit. While it isn’t an adaptation, there was still a lot to cram into 13 episodes. I feel it would work better as a 2 cour (24 episodes) series. That way they would have had more room to fit the whole plot, flesh out all the characters, maybe add more, and still have room to spare.
Art: 8
Not a massive amount to say concerning the art. I like it. Each character looks unique, and the bright hair colours often serve as a reminder that this is an anime, if that doesn’t sound too much like a criticism.
Sound: 9
As I am writing this I’m listening to the OP, "My Soul, Your Beats!" by Lia. The soundtrack is very good in my opinion. OP and ED both very enjoyable to listen to, both invoking somewhat emotional reactions for me personally. Of course, the music of the band Girls Dead Monster from the show is also good, though I’m not much of a metalhead so not much to say about that.
Character: 9
One of my favourite things about this show is the characters. The main protagonist, Yuzuru Otonashi, voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya, is a good character for the audience to experience the show with, and I imagine he is very relatable to certain people in certain circumstances. Yuri Nakamura was interesting, but in my opinion left a bit unexplained. Kanade Tachibana/Tenshi/Angel was also interesting, but what was revealed of her story was crammed into a couple episodes and not given enough time, though I still liked her at the end. I could go on about all the characters and how interesting yet underdeveloped they are, but that would take too long. To summarise, due to the run time, most characters looked promising but were sadly left undeveloped.
Enjoyment: 10
I loved watching Angel Beats! It was funny, heartbreaking and sad, uplifting and happy, and everything in between. One of my favourite anime. Only thing that would make it better is if it was longer, then the show would be nigh perfect.
Overall: 9
In conclusion, Angel Beats! was just brilliant. However it had that one flaw, that it was too short, and it kept it from perfection. But a well done series nonetheless.
