I really really wanted to like this manga. I did! I love stories that take LGBT stuff seriously, as well as talk about homophobia and other things like that, and the main character being a chubby boy with no fat jokes headed his way was really nice!
But the gay character, Sanada, is someone that I struggled to understand. Maybe it's because I'm fresh off the heels of Koimonogatari (another manga that deals with a similar gay situation) and I found that protagonist deeply, deeply understandable as a gay myself, but it was kind of disappointing. My hope was that as the main grew to understand
...
Sanada, we would too, and that DID happen (somewhat - but it is still incomplete), but I don't really like the 'outsider looking in' perspective. That's just me, I guess.
The art is whatever, but that's not something that necessarily detracts majorly for me - what really took away from the story for me was the introduction (MINOR SPOILERS) of Sanada's ex boyfriend. Who is a 26-year-old man. Who then quickly becomes a soft, sweet mentor figure for the cast.
me, screaming
I'm really, really tired of the endless justification of pedophilia. I am! Grown adults dating children is pedophilia, high schoolers or not, and portraying Hide(?) as such a good person makes my stomach churn. It made no sense to me, none, and it was so offputting it drew me right out of the story. It would have been so easy to make him just like, a mentor that Sanada knew - maybe someone he had a crush on at one point, if you want to go that route, but a mature responsible adult who knows not to date children.
God. God! While I was okay with the story before he became a large character (it was just okay), that firmly sunk everything else for me. It was not a fun time.
Please stop normalizing pedophilia, people. Thank you.
