Revenge, greed, vice, corruption. Both series feature the darkness; the evil in human hearts. Worlds depicting a dichotomy between the filthy rich and the suffering poverty, both Gankutsuou and Speed Grapher are vastly different in settings and plot development, but distinctively similar in their themes. Based on the Count of Monte Cristo set in a futuristic setting, Gankutsuou is a story of vengeance. To avoid spoilers, the antagonist had a shocking past filled with desperation and betrayal, and Gankutsuou follows his attempts to destroy and defile his objects of vengeance. Whereas for Speed Grapher, a near future world rather similar to GiTS and DtB, where money is the bringer of all and rich people rule. Amidst the living hell of corruption, Speed Grapher is a story of freedom, to obtain true happiness; and a story of revenge, to bring an end to his tragic past. While dissimilar in characters, environment, and even plots, both series share a subtle motif which emphasises on their similarities. If one were to enjoy the former, he would definitely enjoy the latter.

"That which does not kill us makes us stronger." Friedrich Nietzche Why are humans at the epitome of all biodiversity? We have the ability to think, we have the ability to reflect, we have the ability to dream. How about Miura's Berserk and Urasawa's Monster? Alhough dissimilar in plot content wise and settings wise, both Berserk and Monster attempted, and did portray: Human nature. Griffith, a power-hungry, though passionate sociopath, rises up the ranks through cunning and despicable ways, concealed by his charisma and charm. Johan, driven by his lust of power and control over humans, has emerged out of the horrors of living hell to become a monster. Both "antagonists" are extremely charismatic, manipulative, decisive, unrelenting and "seductive" individuals; they are willing to discard and sacrifice everything in order to achieve their goals. However, both shows feature a different perspective to that end, portraying a sympathetic view to both "adversaries". Ironically, both titles feature a unique twist of fate to that end, at the same time. At first glance, Guts and Doctor Tenma look so unalike in physique that one may even say that they live in different planets. Yet, there is a striking resemblance between the two protagonists. Dr. Tenma Kenzo, a talented neurosurgeon working in West Germany, made the greatest "mistake" in life by reviving a 'monster', and sought to clear up his sin by eliminating it once and for all. Whereas for Guts, his appearance in the Band of the Hawk became the definitive factor of Griffith's ambition, and Guts' realisation became his resolution to defeat Griffith once and for all. And yes, there is a sad story behind the distinct titles and genres for both series. The pace and the development of the plots slowly surface the "truth", similar in Monster and Berserk alike. One cannot help but find these titles similar, when recalled upon. Given the episode count that may frighten off people before watching it, don't. 74 episodes of Monster is totally worth it when retelling Urasawa's Monster novel. Similarly, despite being a heavily condensed series, Berserk outshines many Anime titles out there by not just simply being a "Gar" show, but has its fair share of drama, and even suspense. Watch them both. Nobody regrets it.

Angel Beats!

Imagine having found yourself, to an unknown world, as if a lucid daydream not to be awakened. The rejection and self-denial is nigh, as the individuals, Yuzuru and Rekka, slowly identify with their pasts and gradually accept the truth, within the labyrinth of both worlds, the "afterworld", and the real world. Haibane Renmei, an astute yet nostalgic series that carries an abstract, yet distinct air of suspense to it; Angel Beats, a fulfilling adventure in an alternative (afterlife) world to slowly depreciate and disintegrate as reality steps in. Both attempt to carry a complete and touching plot, with a natural flow in Haibane Renmei; while Angel Beats takes upon an aggressive, and relentless spirit towards the truth.

Musekinin Kanchou Tylor
add

One cannot dismiss the striking resemblance as long as you have come across both space opera masterpieces. Having watched Nadesico firsthand before approaching Tylor, I have to admit: the similarities are way too many, yet one cannot help say that both are distinctively unique and different. Since this is but a recommendation, I would reduce the amount of spoilers as much as possible. Tylor, a seemingly "useless" dude who appeared out of nowhere, is your unexpectedly meaningless protagonist who does not even have a single bit of motivation nor ambition, and just happened to decide on working for the war campaign to get a pension and recognition after retirement. Seriously, yes. And he ended up being the captain of a spaceship due to an unforeseen hostage situation...anymore would be spoilers. Okay, at least Akito aspires to be a chef, and does not want to be involved in anything related to space, due to his scarred past. However, he gets dragged into all the mess; luckily, all's well that ends well. Akito may be similar to Tylor in one aspect: their nonchalance, at least until their situation flips. (Disputable in the case of Tylor) Both protagonists happen to share a great responsibility on their spaceships, the Nadesico and the Soyokaze; not to mention, the crew that surrounds them. The slapstick comedy portrayed in both series are extremely similar, and they are well-established jokes and puns you often see in 90s Anime space operas. However, if observed carefully, both series have deep conspiracies from within, and the situations slowly unfolds throughout the respective plots. Yet, they still end up as your playful and happy titles, and they close up with a conclusion one could expect, yet succulent. As long as you have come across either one, do not hesitate: watch the latter immediately!

Un-Go
add

Let me be straightforward and to the point for this one. Both shows may have extremely contrasting viewpoints and plots; with GITS having the viewpoint of the police Public Security of Section 9, whereas UN-GO features two partners who try to resolve the mystery and conspiracy from within their country. (Though primarily forced by Inga, a supernatural character, so this aspect which is extremely similar to Neuro.) However, these titles share two words: Truth and Justice. Both shows heavily emphasise on justice as not just a belief, nor just a rationale; but as a fact, a human desire. Despite being heavily undermined by the top brasses, Section 9 in GITS never waver despite all the adversities they faced when their corrupted government tries to cover up the issue, endangering their lives in the name of truth and justice. In the case of UN-GO, Shinjuurou is known as the "Defeated Detective", but the "defeated" is but a farce; a facade placed on him and Inga as conspiracy theorists, despite being the true detectives. Heavily observed and subjugated by the higher-ups such as the corrupted Kaishou family and the National Police Agency, the pair attempts to solve the mystery behind their government, while risking themselves behind the actions of the corrupted government. Both shows also involve heavy conspiracies, which are all apparently, true. The stealth, lies, and distractions from within both shows are what bring forth the beauty of this titles, and it is an aspect that one "cannot dislike. Both shows also depict a dystopian society in the aftermath of a devastating war, (with GITS being WWIII and WWIV while UN-GO being the War on Terror) and the impacts towards society from within. People are left for dead despite lying on the floor, bleeding; [when Togusa got shot in Season 1] (depicting the fear and apprehension of the society into heavily desiring a peaceful life and thus minding their own backs, albeit a false peace) the society relies on a higher, corrupted power for control, due to fear of another war, and live in fear; (as observed in the glorification of the Kaishou family) and many more instance I've yet to name. Watch both shows. Do not be indecisive or skeptical anymore. Don't live in regret--not watching these titles.

One cannot simply dismiss the similarity in concepts between these titles. While watching Loki, I cannot help but remember Rental Magica from 2 years back and definitely Neuro. Sharing a concept which involves some form of western occult magic, for instance, Rental Magica embraces all forms of world magic folklore such as Celtic, Solomon and Japanese Onmyouji, while Loki focuses on Norse mythology, as observed by the main character, Loki, himself. Additionally, the gradual and slow pace of plots between the two shows are observed in a similar fashion for both titles, which thus brings out the development and characterisation of the characters effectively.

Despite being TOTALLY different point of views and feel in both titles (having Devil May Cry as the cool main guy with a mixed blood having to destroy demons and Venus Versus Virus with a mysterious girl that has the focus to fight against all 'Viruses', and the first show being very 'shounen-like' while the latter being a 'shoujo-ai' in comparison), the main characters of both shows (namely Dante and Lucia) share the same aim to protect humans from creature that threaten humanity and also have the grudge towards such 'monsters' because of their mysterious pasts. They both share similar supernatural vibes, and not forgetting the fact that both Dante and Lucia are just extremely powerful and 'BADASS'.

Needless
add

Both shows are overall cool fightings, with awesome and almost impossible random fightings, as if one fight ends, another come: packed with loads of action. Main characters are similar in some ways: Princess Alita is soft-spoken, shy and helpless, just like Cruz, but both have strong thinking abilities and both are inspired by their best teammate, Falis and Blade respectively. Additionally, both Falis and Blade LOVES fighting, but for a cause. Not only that, Murder Princess have the overall considerably gory and 'moe' attitude (without ecchi scenes) just like Needless, but the only wasted difference is that Murder Princess ends of too abruptly when compared to the latter. To end off: BOTH SERIES OPENINGS HARDCORE!!!
