Kotoura-san Review:
Kotoura-san is not an anime you would expect (in a bad way). The beginning of this show is misleading, so if you guys expect a fresh engaging drama anime from this show than I suggest you guys not to watch this show.
The show starts off strong, sad, and a very well executed drama with a great visual representation about Kotoura’s past. When Kotoura was still a child she was able to read people minds, because she’s still a child that still doesn’t understand anything she keeps revealing people deepest secret, which makes other people to hate her, all of her friends left her, people
...
calling her monster, she’s being bullied nonstop, and the most painful one is when her parents abandon her. Somehow she managed to live through all that painful memories and just keeps on living, alone. One day she founded an abandon cat which she decided to care for it, but in the end the cat was taken away leaving her alone again. What happens next is probably the most memorable scene in anime, she finally breaks and just screams, screams and screams. What makes this scene great is that after all that painful turmoil that being buildup, somehow she managed to live through all that, finally she just couldn’t take it anymore and she just let it all out. But these aren’t the only reason why this scene is great, the scene goes something like this; it was raining, she was told that the cat was taken away, she just stands there in the rain motionless, the camera slowly zooming in on Kotoura’s eyes, her pupils getting smaller making her eyes all white, and finally she lets out a soundless scream (this is where the music drops in), screaming and screaming she’s even stop for a brief second but then she continues screaming. This scene is sad and its freaking amazing, I will never forget this scene.
Now here’s the disappointment of this series. From dark and psychological approach, the show suddenly change after a happy moe upbeat OP starts playing. This is probably the most painful thing that an anime ever done to me. guagdisudusif (my forehead wrote that) all of those dark, sad, dramatic, and psychological theme just gone, and suddenly the anime turns into this typical cliché moe romance slice of life show, WHAT THE HELL!!!
Well that’s enough about my rant, now let’s talk about this anime’s slice of life, is it good? Well surprisingly it is. The show is surprisingly fun, hilarious and very enjoyable. Watching Kotoura’s growth overcoming her sadness is great, with the help of her friends supporting her is really heartwarming to watch. The romance is also great, it wasn’t force and there’s an actual great romantic development between Kotoura and Manabe. The comedy is hilarious, with Kotoura’s mind reading ability it makes the comedy fresh and fun to watch. But there are also some episodes that are cliché, corny and boring (beach episode), and at episode 9 – 11 the show suddenly changes into mystery, detective genre which turns out bad and then in episode 12 it returns into slice of life again, what’s with these inconsistent genre?
Now for the characters, Kotoura is definitely an interesting character especially after that prologue. Manabe is this idiotic character who always thinking about perverted stuff (this is where the gags come from), but he is a really funny and likable character. Yuriko is the president of ESP club, at first she just wants to use Kotoura as a tool to prove the existence of ESP but over time however, she recognizes how selfish she is being, and instead befriends Kotoura and the others. Moritani is the character that I hate, because her character is just forceful, she’s one of those character that you should hate at the beginning but later on they become a likable character. But it just doesn’t work with her character because all she did was feeling jealous with Kotoura and Manabe relationship, felt guilty and ask Kotoura forgiveness for what she did to her, that’s it. Kotoura’s mother also has the same case as Moritani, but her character are done much better than Moritani’s, and Kotoura’s mother only have short screentime.
The music in this show is pretty standard nothing stands out, the OP is pretty average compared to the ED, the ED is much better because the tone is right and it’s emotional. The only soundtrack that I’m impressed with is the prologue, the prologue runs about 10 minutes long and it only uses one track for that whole 10 minutes, impressive.
The art style is pretty average but its fitting for moe show like this. But then again this is not the case for the prologue, the visual is really creative, unique and memorable and the usage of color pellets for the prologue really fits the tone.
So in conclusion, Kotoura - san is a great slice of life show but it’s a letdown after what we’ve seen in the prologue. It makes you wonder how the show would be if they keep using that dark and sad tone for the whole show. I would recommend this a watch for those people who loves moe romantic slice of life comedy show but I wouldn’t recommend this show for those people who expected something new and fresh.

Gakkou Gurashi Review:
First time review Here’s what I think about Gakkou Gurashi, Gakkou Gurashi is amazing but it could’ve been done better. At first I didn’t pay much attention to this series, so I just put it on my watch list. When I finally watched the first episode, I crapped my pants. I watched this show without knowing anything about it, I didn’t know the genre, I didn’t watch the trailer, and I never see any screenshot (the summary is misleading), so it was a real shock for me and it makes me wanting more. Now here’s the problem with the following episodes, they aren’t consistent. The episodes ... |
