Fortunately, I didn't get to start watching this until after 5 episodes had aired, so I planned a marathon.

I nearly dropped it after the first episode just because the story seemed too dark, depressing, and frustrating. However, the story was unusual enough that it held my interest. I got through the next four episodes begrudgingly — the plot wasn't appropriate for escapist satisfaction like I prefer, but I was too hooked to stop watching.

When episode 6 aired, I wasn't sure if I was going to watch it, but I came back to it anyway, and I'm glad I did. The completely mental storyline ... began to get stitched together, and the greater depth that had been an ongoing hint began to get revealed.

I'll keep watching, and I'm honestly looking forward to next week's episode to see how it pans out.

I'll probably stick with this anime until the end. I get the feeling that it'll be a slow burn that will end up as something impressive.

On a final note, the voice actors were all good, but the MC's VA has an especially varied expressiveness that can change gears at an astounding and jarring rate, so kudos on that too! (Seriously... rage to slapstick to sorrow all in about 30 seconds... It's kinda' awe-inspiring.)

Disclaimer: only 4 chapters have been published at the time I'm writing this. My opinion might change later, but I have high hopes. Also, I intended this review to be short and sweet, but the minimum requirements by MAL are preventing me from that... But on to the real review!

So far, this manga has a nice touch of the supernatural (hint: look at girl's shadow on the cover), but it's still early enough that I don't know which direction it's going to take. It could be an intensely supernatural manga, or just a source of explanation for one of the characters.

I might be overlooking ... something, but so far it doesn't seem to be leaning in the direction of "harem" either... However, there's enough ecchi to give the already good story an extra boost of interest. It's not really perverted, and it's not constant, so when the occasional nude happens, it's a nice little event.

The undertones of potentially strong romance are definitely there, and the art is (in my opinion) fantastic.

I can't give too much more than that, other than that this is interesting, and I look forward to each new chapter that comes out. (If this were a "completed" manga, I probably would have binged on it and read it in a weekend.)

I strongly recommend giving it a shot.

I am normally not a fan of harem animes because they typically leave the viewer without a conclusion. Sekirei was very unique to me because it presented a situation in which it was almost okay for the male MC to have a harem. Yes, most of the girls in his harem would have liked to have had him exclusively theirs, so those feelings remain. However, the status of all harem members is clear to all, and they're all better off for being in his harem--quite unique if you ask me.

Basically, this was one of the most acceptable harems I've ever seen, and wish ... they would continue the series. The manga is even better.

Additionally, the action scenes are pretty awesome, and the underlying plot was good.

The clincher for me was that this is a harem that seems to have actual elements of romance in it. The girls all are obvious about their feelings for him, but the male actually isn't a clueless, emotionally unavailable tsundere. He actually does show to each of them that he cares about them as individuals. That's valuable to me in a harem anime.

The people who hate this anime simply confuse me. But then again, if you like typical harem animes, Sekirei isn't your typical harem.

An uncommon plot: boy and girl fall in love, and boy and girl are loyal to each other throughout the whole series. It doesn't deserve to be called a harem for that in my opinion. Yes, there are several other female characters, all of whom seem to have feelings for the male lead, but he (as I said) is pretty kind about things. The female lead is positively beyond human--patient, kind, and generally perfect to a point that is impossible for a real person. It's a happy, uplifting show. Absolutely wonderful.

Allow me to preface this by saying that the only thing barring this from a better review from me was its depressing brevity. I felt like this could have easily been at least a 25 episode show, and it ended all too soon. I ranked the story as a 7 for this reason (given more time and character development, it would have been worth a possible 10).

I began watching this expecting another fun, rom-com harem. Oh, and the end of the first episode made me thing that perhaps some forbidden romance with his sister was brewing as well. Thankfully, my expectations were rather wrong ... on all accounts.

For starters, the main character was NOT a douche-bag. (Perhaps oblivious at times, but isn't that a requirement for a male high school character in an anime?) In fact, he was a rather admirable, kind hearted guy with a soft spot for animals and a penchant for wanting to help people.

As for the harem aspect, yes, it seems that all the main female characters were in love with the male protagonist. However, the way they dealt with it seemed surprisingly good to me. The story spent more time developing the ways the girls dealt with their unrequited feelings, and I felt like I watched each of them mature a little over the course of those twelve episodes. My two favorite girls dealt with their feelings differently--one with brave stoicism, the other by shedding many tears before realizing how to move on. But it seemed great, and was a real tear-jerker in parts. Although the girl I was rooting for "lost," I still like the way the show ended and the girl the MC ended up with. I'll probably watch it again in a couple of months.
