SPOILER WARNING- Mini Review/Analysis
just some thoughts
Romantic Killer is an anime I started on a whim and I'm glad I did. I'm not the biggest romance fan, but I think the groundwork for the series was done pretty well. A reverse harem with a mostly comedic approach is something you don't see often. Anzu being disinterested into a relationship due to the deal with Riri, was enjoyable all the way trough. Especially the facial expressions and the stereotypical romance scenes turning into a comedy scene were pretty funny.
The biggest complaints I've read so far about the series were the episodes with a more "serious"
...
tone. It's never easy for a comedy series to delve into more serious topics. With that being said, I think Romatic Killer explored it's themes greatly. Since the first episode, this anime was always about people disliking the uncomfortable. Living comfortably and turning away from possibilities we may not like which is only natural. Anzu being the most notable example, as she lived a life mostly isolated and only caring about her favorite things. Or Hijiri who saw himself superior to others until he got to know Anzu and the rest of the cast. And in the final episodes, this narrative reached it's climax with Kazukis conflict.
Even though his character design is highly boring, Kazuki as a good guy looking always attracted a lot of women. This lead to the entire stalker incident which happened in his past. Due to that, it was hard for him to connect with others or truly trust them again. It was always shown how he felt uncomfortable in crowded places or being asked out. As a result, he lived a life in fear and wanting to not be noticed. That all started to change the day Anzu ran trough the door and destroyed his phone. Seeing him regaining trust in others and confidence troughout the show was beatiful to witness. Despite the fact that Yukana (stalker) was very annoying, she served as a perfect tool to give closure for Kazukis character arc. Him finally confronting her and more importantly his past was needed. Rather than an instant change, it will be a process for Kazuki to completely trust others. But the first and most important step has been made, as he was able to free himself from the shackles. A great cathartic moment and a beatiful closure.
Thanks to the help from eachother and a lot of unforeseeable events, everyone from the cast was able to grow a little bit. I know most people would love a season 2 but I'm pretty happy with the way it ended in season 1. The little community and friendship they have build amongst eachother is so adorable to me, that I wouldn't exchange it against a romance battle between the male characters. Nevertheless, Romantic killer for me was a very fun anime and something I highly enjoyed. Definetly recommend this show to others, it's very accesible and easy to watch. To end this off, I want to quote our little magical creature Riri:
"We live in a time where we can choose what we want to watch. But what have we lost along the way? Don't say you don't want to change. Explore more and life a happy, sparkling life."
