Oshi No Ko and its story in general have always captivated me. It’s way being able to weave a truly interesting story and all of the moving pieces, while also being an interesting look at the Japanese entertainment industry is absolutely incredible. There are things it was inspired by, but there is nothing exactly like Oshi No Ko out there, although I imagine there will be many try to capitalize on that success.

From an animation perspective studio Dogo Kobo did an incredible job yet again. There were a lot of scenes that had me blown away with the creative uses of lighting and framing to. ... This isn’t just something that is good, it’s exceptional. The character designs are across the board some of the best to see this season, and it even has an amazing score, OP, and ED to go along with it.

This story focuses a lot more on a smaller list of projects than season 1 did, but it goes through the entire process of bringing a manga adaptation to a stage. It shows parts of what goes into writing a play, writing a manga, how adaptations of source material can go wrong, and how much stress this can put on the young actors, scriptwriters, and directors. Not to mention we get a bit of a glance at writing Idol music as well. It’s educational of the industry in a way that doesn’t even feel like it is. It’s just part of how the story is told.

Overall, with a season 3 announced I absolutely cannot wait to see where this story goes. It works so well here, and the plot really moved along for a lot of characters. Many characters are at a cross-roads in a sense. Where will they go? I have a feeling this one will keep us guessing until the very end. What an amazing show.

As someone not familiar with the source material, I still really ended up enjoying this one. Its story had a lot of ups and downs, but as this one wrapped up I couldn’t deny this one had a lot more good than bad.

I liked the central romance and the debate of humanoids and their emotional capacity for a variety of different things. While it isn’t a new idea by any means, it still works extremely well and opens the story up to a lot more interpretation for the viewer and allows them to feel their own way about the events.

The animation quality itself ... was really strong, and the character designs worked really well. My only issue would be that I felt like the ending rushed things just a bit too much. While I loved the ending and sometimes things are better left unsaid, I can’t help but feel like taking a bit more time at the very ending scene would have helped wrap up some plot threads that I don’t feel were closed off particularly well.

There are a lot of newer Shonen property that I have really enjoyed over the last couple of years, but this one really worked for me. The reason for the score, is mostly because of the middle stretch of episodes that I thought really drug down the pacing of this one, but I am sure that is how the manga was as well. It doesn’t change the fact that the bookends to this one are the best of the series.

The concept of the sudden marriage of these childhood friends, and the fish out of water story of a boy trying to adapt to a world ... of spy’s and other “underworldly” type characters was a really strong one. As it closed out it became an excellent battle Shonen, with a story that really got me emotional at times. I love some romance, so it was nice to see a battle Shonen take the route of being centered around a romance.

With a season 2 announced, I will definitely be on board for that. This strikes a good balance of comedy, action, and story moments that make this one pretty easy to recommend to anyone who enjoys this type of a story.

There is something to be said about an anime that isn’t particularly original, but does everything is so well that it really doesn’t matter anyway. Such is the case with this one. A story much like Mashle or many of the other similar ideas that are becoming popular today. This particular one does focus more on the drama and overcoming the odds in a more dramatic way, instead of focusing on the comedy. This gives it that iconic anime underdog feeling on this one, without ever feeling too much like the competition.

What this has better than most is the animation quality. There is no ... underselling that this has some of the best animation of the season. Even during the down moments, this show has better animation quality than most. It looks fantastic. I can see for some viewers the hyper movement in the action sequences can become a bit of a blur, but it does add to the action sequences for me making them look extremely fluid and interesting.

Overall, I am so happy to hear that this one is getting another season. I have enjoyed this one pretty well from the start. If you are looking for some of the best action you will find this season, look no further.

Also shout out to this being my 200th completed anime on here, and what a fantastic way to round out that number.

This was my personal sleeper hit of the season. I can imagine it won’t appeal to everyone, but I imagine this will scratch the itch for us old school Shonen people that grew up on this sort of thing. Sure it modernizes it well too, but it has a great core of that old school battle Shonen type feel.

It reminded me of being a kid watching Dragon Ball, and watching people just fight to become the strongest in the world. It also does the seemingly new found trope of the older than usual protagonist storyline and how it is never too late to become ... who you want to be.

The action is well done. It won’t do anything you haven’t seen before, but the look just nails the nostalgic feel. Character designs are all pretty cool, and the faces look distinct and interesting.

The best part to me is the overall plot. It has a good mixture of comedy, adventure, and even a fun tournament arc. It really has everything that I could have wanted as a kid, and it was a nice blast to the past this season.

For al the hype that this anime has been getting, I truly feel like this deserves every bit of it. I generally prefer my romance anime a bit more dramatic, than leaning on the comedy. Fortunately, this one has an incredible blend of both. This also features some of the best character writing I have seen in romance in a long time.

The premise alone is incredible. Essentially the different types of girls that typically lose out to the main love interest of the protagonists we typically follow around. This one has our protagonist surrounded by the girls that were instead not chosen. It’s a ... fantastic approach, and has a great blend of fun drama moments as well as excellent usages of messages of things move on and many other well done message moments.

I don’t know that this is the anime of the season, but it’s certainly close and one that I can’t imagine I wouldn’t almost immediately recommend this to someone looking for a good romance anime. It just works extremely well

This one really surprised me. In the process of getting caught up on some of the shows getting a sequel season for the fall, I decided to get this series through as well. It really wasn't as much what I expected either. Which truly is a good thing, as what I was expecting was a lot less fun than this concept is.

Danmachi does a great job of building it's world and what to expect from its story. I like the comfy feel of the show as it moves along fairly slow, but it never feels boring. It just allows time between the action to ... build the characters and some of the world that is shown here is actually really clever and fun. The story really opens up when the cast of characters broadens a bit, and the chemistry between Belle and his allies is extremely fun. These types of shows live and breathe by their cast, and luckily this one really landed for me. Specifically the character of Lady Hestia.

Overall, this isn't a shining example of the artsy side of anime. It is however, a very fun show that knows what it is and appeals to fans of that material to the best of their abilities. I haven't had this much fun with a show in a good while, and I am excited to continue through it.

I am honestly a bit surprised how much hype I have been hearing about this as it entered into its final weeks of airing. From the start with this anime, I absolutely loathed this one. The first episode showed some promise. It has every Isekai trope in the book, but it made for an entertaining setup. After that is when it really lost its main redeeming element. It’s animation.

Budgetary reason or not, the 3D animated models looked dismal, there’s no other way to slice it. To make matters worse it switched so rapidly between the 2D and 3D animation that it made the poor visuals ... look even worse.

That is what the problem was. The story was too much like “From Commonplace to World’s Strongest” to where why wouldnt’ you just watch that, or it’s many similar shows. The writers had no ideas. No example more clear than every villain was the exact same. Just some absolute scumbag always verbally assaulting whatever women are around. It’s insane.

Overall, I just can’t recommend this one. I understand people like me love Isekai, but I have to draw a line somewhere. There are just way too many similar shows to this that execute so much better than this.

I feel like this was just one of the shows that existed this season. It never made a strong impact either way. Neither negative or positive feelings. It was no, it was there, and I wasn’t having a bad time. That’s about all I can really say about it, in all honesty.

The story was strange. A multi-species war breaks out, and the humans won. Oh wait, our mostly soulless protag gets taken to another world where it’s the same people, but the outcome of the war changes, and only he remembers what happened in the other world.

Obviously the story gets a bit more advanced ... than that eventually, but that’s the general idea. The problem is the story never really feels like it matters much. It just kinda checks the boxes and keeps moving never really stopping to let it all sink in. Cute girl, onto the next battle. Introduce characters just enough to make you not completely disinterested, and then onto the next action scene.

As far as safe seasonal shows go, this really wasn’t al too bad. I just can’t really recommend it fully as for everything this does I think other shows do better. In fact Our Last Crusade… the author’s other offering I feel like is much better and it unfortunately got delayed.

The Elusive Samurai was an interesting one to say the least. It’s a historical setting, featuring some true to life characters which of course would be something that would keep history buffs interested in this one.

To Give Cloverworks credit here, this was animated incredibly well, and even if I wasn’t the biggest fan this clearly was a quality show. From a visual standpoint it doesn’t get a lot better than this. From the unique and interesting character designs, to some incredibly fluid animation work the show just looks incredible.

The discussion point for this show will always be the strange tonal shifts. I might as ... well go ahead and address this now, and say that yes the tone was the problem for me. I understand that a lot of anime has this sort of issue, however I have not seen such an extreme example of tonal strangeness in a long while. It would go from images of an entire village with children slaughtered, then you would have some radiant beam craziness filling the screen completely taking away the impact. I imagine the intent is to keep the show from getting too dark, but then wouldn’t it make sense to scale it back a bit? I mean trust me, I like Akame ga Kill, I like gore, but this just doesn’t seem like the series to do it given the tone. It just feels like it’s holding its punches then for some reason accidentally decking them with the punches right after. Strange stuff.
