These 2 manga are master works of Taiyou and Otomo Both manga have a quite similar setting in a fictive which riddled with corruption, inequalities and a premonitory sense of apocalypse. The protags are both young out-of-law people with quite opposite personalities. Although both abords the coming-of-age part, B&W abords more about it, Akira goes with a more "Xtreme" manner

Both manga share the same archetype of MC: A surgeon with a twisted personality and mysterious backstories, such as unknown origin of their families(Jack vs Fran). They are also exceptional at their jobs where their patients can be saved by their unconventional methods. For example in Franken Fran, a girl crushed by a truck got saved by replacing the whole body with a giant caterpillar one. Lastly, the MC is also accompinaed by their accolytes(Pinoko vs Veronica) Plot-Wise, both of them have the same non-linear storyline. In each chapter, the character is confrontated inside a dillema between the life and the death, the moral and the immoral, the right or wrong. Lastly, the morals. While Black Jack got a really deep and dark moral, then FF is similar but twisted
