Both stories tell about how war unmasks humanity. Just like "Eleven" in Code Geass, "Eighty-Six" is not always good but also always ends up being oppressed. The two main characters also both have heroines beside them, the difference is that Lelouch in Code Geass can talk and work together with the heroine (even use her for "personal" desire), unlike Shin in 86 who only interacts with the heroine via telephone or whatever is that. 86 animation is much better, smoother and more fluid. You will see a clear difference between these two titles in the animation, Code Geass was literally animated 10 years ago so it's natural that some people will immediately drop when they watch the first episode. But believe me, even though the Code Geass animation is strange and irrelevant nowadays, it can still be watched and understood well as like 86.
