:(
Code G is an overrated franchise dwelling within exaggeration and factorial depiction. The characters are always portrayed as a collective rather than as individuals with any distinct traits; it's the "body of students", "those with power", and "Lelouch's acquaintances". There is hardly any manner of creativeness on-screen protruding from any of the characters. In this sense, the show comes off as 'manufactured' and 'lifeless'.
Lelouch's power is also not restrained. While it is indeed each to their own and a character with overpowered abilities can be pulled off as good, the majority of times it simply counteracts the plot. If Lelouch was really that intelligent as he was implied to be, the dramatic conventions he partakes in seems pretty pointless. A much more straightforward path could have been implemented; to challenge his father directly instead of going through the numerous 'little journeys'. This, in turn, provides a story that is horribly done; the exposition is ridiculous, the coincidences are everywhere, and the fanservice is there for no reason - and most notably, Lelouch himself generates a feeling of being a simple device to further the plot.
In addition, the robots merely emphasize the creator's laziness. They are there for the sake of being there, and the design, as well as explanations, are astoundingly lacklustre. Don't get me wrong, Mecha is great. That is if it's done so. The machines in CG feel like they're unfitting of the show's own premise of story and setting. When such a fundamental essence of the show is blaring blatant awkwardness, what more is there to be interpreted? It's a painfully obvious attempt at recreating the wonders of the Gundam Universe.
When compared to actual animes that deal in intelligence and themes of rebellion or strategy, LotGH or Death Note, Monster, come to mind better than this peer pressure overrated show.
On the other hand, Free provides a plethora of recognizable and unique characters. When it comes to shows that employ mimesis, Free does it not by the book, but by the motivation of said representation. It adheres to 'uniqueness' not in abundance but at a welcomed pace; the characters DEVELOP over time as opposed to CG. If you study Lelouch, an unpleasant realization that he is literally the same person at the end blooms forth.
What originally instanced a dull, lifeless Haru quickly reforms to a different persona once his personalities conform to the needs and wants overlapping with the other characters. Not to spoil anything for you if you haven't seen it, but if you're one of those who judges a show not by the opinions of others but through watching the show, then perhaps attempt at seeing past the colours and tropes into each character's core.
While many do condemn this to be 'gay', I truly find it intriguing. It's a swimming show; bodies are shown. Yet no concentration on body parts is ever introduced. It's there: simply because, well, they're swimming in swimsuits. You don't see a boob bounce or needless flushes of embarrassment not normal in a certain situation. You see the water as another extra icing on the cake - it's done perfectly. Free! is literally about liberty in all senses - the characters, the water, the music... the aforementioned aspects are blended together into a wonderful fabric that is the personification of 'balance'.
The entire show is a slice of life journey within swapping lives of the many characters. There is no overall plot - the story goes along with the characters. If this is done and it flows, then the tale of Haru can simply be said to be seamless, as in accordance with the very title: Free!
While both CG and Free! each have their own pros and cons, for me, the pros in Free! shine much more when levelled with Code Geass.
