Preliminary (36/? chp)

I don't know what the other people in this review section are talking about, this is a great little manga. It has excellent art, fun fight scenes, and likeable characters. I don't even mind the more tedious, edgy stuff. The author is good at writing and it shows!

Also, to that other guy that was complaining the premise is a reddit take on Christianity, no! Just no! If anything, it reminds me of Milton - the deceptive "virtue" of the various fiends, the temptation to blame God, the way it tries to mess with you. It's far smarter than you're giving it credit for.

Anyways, I ...

I'd REALLY recommend this, and anything else this author's done, despite my score being only "good." At the end of the day, Ogino is an excellent manga artist and writer with a genuine, unique style of writing and illustrating. The writing here is no exception - it's what you hoped One Punch Man was, before you realized it was an extended gag with forced melodrama. The art really clean, the story is well paced, and it's a shame there's only 20 chapters, as far as I can tell.

WITH THAT SAID: Ogino likes lesbians. Which, like, hey - whatever gets your rocks off. In my opinion, ...

Dai Dark (Manga) add
Preliminary (18/? chp)
Ah! Where to start? Dai Dark is the second full-fledged manga from Q Hayashida, the zany mangaka behind Dorohedoro. It's a deeply imaginative take on far-future space travel seinen with all the over-the-top violence and low stakes that make Dorohedoro great. If you've read Dorohedoro, read this. If you haven't, well...

Art:
What can be said? Q Hayashida simply kills it. There's no one like her. Both her charming character design and mindboggling background work demand a 10. The story notwithstanding, this one of those mangas you can read just to gawk at the gorgeous, uber-distinctive art. I'd put it up there with Hellper, Blame!, and CSM. ...

I haven't seen any reviews of this manga yet and I think it desperately deserves one. Here goes: as of right now, Ranger Reject seems like a more mature indie hit in the vein of Fire Punch. The premise is a fairly clever twist on super sentai -- I'd liken it to The Boys, if you've seen that. While it's a bit too early to make a final verdict, I'm still recommending this. A few more thoughts below.

Art:
The art is really well-done, though it's not particularly memorable in its own right. One gripe I have is that it's kind of hard to tell to ...

One of the most criminally underrated shows of its era. There's no denying that this show was produced in the twilight years of Studio Bones' heyday, and that the serial format is not everyone's cup of tea. However, everything else is great. The writing is mature, and I'm not sure there's any other anime that does Western superheroes as much justice.

Likewise, the worldbuilding and character design is top-notch. It's rare for action anime to properly account for the world politics, and I appreciate how much it's done here. MI6, CIA, DGSE, the Triad -- they're all present, and appropriately evil. The characters who represent ...

The first manga I ever read, and the first anime I ever watched -- and boy am I glad. Fullmetal Alchemist is a classic, one of those incredibly rare shows that does *everything* right. The world is quirky and engaging, the production quality is top-notch (with special shoutouts to the soundtrack), and the story features some of the best characters and dramatic moments in anime.

It should say something that this show is ranked #1 on MAL; there's a whole lot to love, regardless of who you are or what you like. I don't think it's perfect, but it's about as good an introduction as ...

Hunter x Hunter is the arguably best shonen ever written, and the 2011 anime adaptation does a great job of adapting it. While there's a little bit of padding in some episodes and the background soundtrack can become a little too familiar (barring Hisoka's hilarious little guitar theme), everything else is excellent. The writing is unforgettable, the characters are one of a kind, and the fights are clever without being particularly contrived or drawn out. I would say that there is no other show like it, except pretty much every other well-respected shonen author ever has paid homage or drawn inspiration from it.

I'd recommend ...

A timeless, one of a kind show. Almost everything about it has held up through the decades. It's gorgeous and well-written, and the soundtrack absolutely kicks ass. I sorta wish I'd watched this when I was younger, though -- I often find myself thinking this show is mildly juvenile in how innocent it is. That's not really a knock, by the way; there is plenty of great writing for boys.

My only cautionary comment is that you should be ready for the slow-burn; it takes a while for the show to hit its full stride. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a longer ...
