Although it can be frustrating to watch these characters from a modern POV (& with too many people comparing it to IRL), this anime & manga was/still is quite enjoyable to watch. There’s a reason why there were several drama adaptations of this anime in several Asian countries. It‘s one of the most successful ‘realistic’ (non magic) shoujo storylines.
It’s a shoujo with your typical tsundere character & follows the characters from high school through college & even after college. Not many anime’s/mangas do this! The anime did a great job finishing the manga story after the mangaka passed away. There’s character development & we!re given
...
more of a reason through the story as to why the MC is in love with the tsundere. You can’t say that for a lot of shoujos that give shallow reasons for love.
Art & soundtrack are well done for the time & I think it still holds up. A remaster of the anime in the same art would definitely be something I’d like to see.

STORY:
SPOILER
SPOILER
SPOILER
SPOILER
The story was extremely lackluster in the end. I mean the whole Megalo Boxing aka Robotic Boxing concept was so the head of a company could show off how much more powerful her gear could be.
Are you kidding me?? She created a new form of boxing...to show off her conpany’s gear.
Joe wanting / lusting for a clean & fair fight was good, but the side plot of the gear was crap. They could’ve done a side story to explain why Joe’s outcast village he’s from isn’t allowed citizenship! They brought that up & some war, but never said another thing about it.
What a waste.
...
ART:
The art is pretty great. It really reminded me of Samurai Champloo, but throughout the anime the animation just started looking like a regular anime style. It was still very different from most anime’s though. NOSES!!
SOUND:
I mean, I liked it lol
CHARACTER:
Characters were enjoyable, not memorable.
ENJOYMENT / OVERALL:
I liked it for what it was but if I had to actually judge it overall, it’s a great anime compared to the trash that’s been put out for the past 8 years. Alone I would say it’s *just good*. Another anime that will pass my mind & isn’t that memorable.

The only people who will like this anime are people who are easily influenced or easily amused.
This anime is next to AICO on Netlfix's worst animes ever.
ART / SOUND:
The art is the ONLY redeeming thing about this anime. It's a unique style of background art that's for sure. It reminded me of an old storybook & I actually liked it.
The character art is your standard cutsey art. Nothing new.
Sound. Meh. Nothing special.
CHARACTERS / STORY:
...
The characters are dull & idiotic. We're supposed to care about these characters, but you end up just not caring because everyone is so weak & stupidly does things.
Story also falls flat. Interesting concept with the moving islands in the sand. Your average plot of one side thinking the other side is the devil & that's why they do bad things.
They tried so hard to make a meaningful story, but failed to execute it because the writers straight up suck. It was very predictable. The narration was so unneeded. Everything that happened only happened because everyone was being dumb.
This is the equivalent of an "art student" randomly splattering paint & then trying to make some philosophical meaning behind it.
I'm sure SOME people are thinking "NO THIS WAS ABOUT THE NECESSITY OF HUMAN EMOTION" blablablabla. Good for you. Bless your pure soul.
ENJOYMENT / OVERALL:
I only kept watching it because I wanted to see if the plot would get better with the climax.
It didn't. Ended up just finishing to finish.
Background noise while I reviewed my class material.

I LOVED this show.
I watched this show knowing NOTHING about it's manga or past anime background & was pleasantly surprised.
STORY:
They did an excellent transition of making it a shock-value comedy to a dark, "realistic" anime.
Realistic as in it addressed a lot of human-issues towards the end.
And here I thought this was just a shock-value comedy because of the insane nudity & running animation.
JOKES.
ON.
ME.
...
ART:
The animation really turned me off because I hated that animation style since it was similar to that Ping Pong anime, but I got over it because the plot evolved into something phenomenal!
SOUND:
Sound was great. Nothing AMAZING, but it fit the story.
CHARACTERS:
BOY OH BOOOOOOOY was I conflicted with the characters lol
They were annoying, but for whatever reason I cared about them! I didn't want anyone to die. I didn't want anything bad to happen to them.
I was shocked at everything that happened to them & genuinely upset at what happened.
I never like annoying characters so this was a surprise.
ENJOYMENT:
I watched this with my boyfriend & wanted to cheat-watch so bad! We usually watch 1-2 EP's a night & I was itching to watch each night.
OVERALL:
I highly recommend this.
After reading up about the manga & how drastically different the older anime was from the manga, this is something I think everyone should watch & learn from.
Also, frick the ending.

AICO was such a poorly done anime.
Classic example of a beautifully animated anime slapped onto a poor plot.
All of the characters were all annoying.
The story was thrown at the audience way too fast with all of this information & was jump-started extremely randomly.
It just sucked. It pulled a lot of elements from popular anime (you will DEFINITELY see a lot of Attack on Titan in this) which showed how creative the creators were.
A lot of anime now-a-days have turned into a cutesy copying cesspool of junk & this is one of them.
Animation can NOT save a bad plot.
I couldn't even watch this as background noise,
...
it was so so bad.

Violet Evergarden is basically about a girl who has PTSD from the war, but she doesn't know it yet.
She's holding back her emotions & acts like she can't understand emotions to block out what she's done from the war.
The catalyst that releases this is [1st EP SPOILER] the death of her Major whom she doesn't know is dead yet.
Through helping people by writing letters for them, she slowly shows her emotions & starts to understand how to "be a human".
This isn't a bad story at all. Is it "AMAZING, BEST ANIME OF THE YEAR" material?
Nah.
But I'm sure that people who are easily amazed will
...
think so.
It's still a well done anime though. You start to understand emotions that people don't want to admit to & a lot of the stories told in order to tell Violet's story get very personal.
I found it interesting how side characters would narrate Violet’s life & personality.
It highlighted even more that she was indeed human afterall, despite her claims that she’s emotional-less & not like a human.
Supporting characters (her coworkers) don't really matter much. You only ever get to know one of them while getting to know the rest on a very surface level.
It's a slow-moving story with beautiful art & soundtrack.

A HUUUGE mistake many have made when criticizing One Punch Man is the fact that they constantly forget that this is a COMEDY.
Unlike most action-comedies, this is ALWAYS Comedy first, Action 2nd.
This is what OPM IS. It's what MAKES it.
So when people say "Oh they were unnecessarily comedic at this part or that part", they're just being dumb in thinking this is your regular action-comedy instead of realizing it's a comedy-action lol
[Story] 8
OPM DOES has a linear story line that it follows of Saitama as he fights his way up the ranks [of the Hero Association, think of it like the ranks of
...
a Guild in Fairy Tail] with his cool "lackey" Genos.
The whole 1st season is all about slowly introducing who's the REAL enemy & who are the allies through fights with big villains.
Beyond all of the tiny enemies are enemies whom you would think are allies.
[Art] 10
I think it's pretty great. Pretty on par with Shounen actions.
[Sound] 10
No complaints. I quite like it. Especially the ending credit sons.
[Char] 7
Although I understand that they want to quickly move through long introductions, it kind of annoys me at times.
You don't really get to personally know the characters as you would in Naruto or AoT for ex.
You get a quick 1-2 min summary on Saitama & Genos & that's it.
Maybe it's just personal preference, but I just wanted more.
Other than that, I quite liked most of the characters, both good & evil.
As we move on through the story, we see that Saitama isn't just your goofy, part-time hero. He makes a lot of sacrifices without asking for much because he simply doesn't care.
In one episode, he sacrifices his own dignity as a Hero to not allow the public to bring down the other Heroes. He lusted to be admired, but dropped it immediately when it came down to it.
He's actually...pretty admirable lmao
His powers are ridiculous & he's beyond any of the S Class Heroes [highest rank Heroes], but they managed to put in some admirable points about him.
[Enjoyment / Overall] 10 / 9
Overall, I personally enjoyed it. It does get docked off 1 point because I don't think it should get a 10 because of what I said about the characters though.
I definitely think it deserves a 9 because it IS a great comedic, action anime that pokes fun at the long intro's that heroes or villains make while maintaining a continuous plot with villains as bumps in the road to the plot.

SO, this is a story set in a Steampunk-ish Edo era with human-monsters whose hearts glow & are something like a zombie-vampire hybrid who are smarter than your avg beast.
[STORY]: 5.5
What started as a very interesting story led to a very disappointing end.
The series went from a story about a world taken over by monster-turned humans, then turned into a story about saving a girl who consistently makes irrational, stupid mistakes & this rando guy & his daddy issues.
Instead of focusing on the world created & the people, it became a FAMILY drama.
They constantly change what Kanabe (the monsters) can do & what the Kanaberi
...
(monster-human hybrids) can do, making Kanaberi basically invincible.
I get that MC's are usually invincible, but the amt of times he's survived from these crazy situations is just crazy.
The enemy's objective is pointless & their leader has no real reason to have any followers, but they do anyways.
REALLY, REALLY sucks too because this anime had SO much potential!
[ART]: 10
The animation was absolutely fantastic!
They definitely spared no expenses in animating this.
It's on par with movie animation, great quality.
Wish more anime were able to be animated like this.
-
One thing that bothered me the ENTIRE series was the fact that the main character remained to look like some kind of Frankenstein char w/ his hair & skin discoloration just for the sake of making it obvious that he's "different" or "special".
Honestly, it annoyed me because there's 2 other hybrids who don't look like that at all. Even IF the MC made himself like that by accident, he still shouldn't look THAT different lol
[SOUND]: 7
It was alright. The OP & ED were just eh.
Nothing fantastic, nothing.
They definitely attempt to use the music & sound to make a char have a more dramatic effect when they're giving a speech, but it doesn't help.
It just falls flat lol
ie EP 3 the music gets dramatic & it zooms in on the char when he's saying s/t to convince the people why he's not dangerous, it's supposed to be inspirational or whatever, but imo it doesn't help when the words are kinda basic & flat
[CHAR]: 4
I didn't like any of them. Maybe the Princess chick, but just barely.
If any of the main char had died, I would've been like "Ok, next."
They're just all so stupid lmao
But you know what, as stupid as they are they're kind of realistic.
I truly believe that real people would be this reckless & stupid xD
Maybe not THIS stupid, but pretty close.
Let's be honest, humans are irrational beings who try their best to do the right thing & make numerous mistakes along the way.
[ENJOYMENT / OVERALL]: 7
Overall, it was an enjoyable pastime between my studies.
I would rate it a 6 or a 6.5, but I wanted to level out the 1 Star ratings.
I mean cmon man.
A
ONE??
The animation should've bumped you up to a 3 regardless of how shitty you thought it was.
I've seen bad anime that deserved 1's & this is NOT it.

With modern anime lacking uniqueness more & more as the years go on--magical girl / stuck in video games / sports--this anime stands out in a very good way.
What starts as a typical schoolgirl anime about unrequited love for a teacher quickly turns into a tragic multi-way, unrequited love fest.
This anime is a very tasteful (gonna be using his word a lot lol) & refreshing anime to watch because, as stated before, it's different.
-
-
-
[STORY]: 8.5
This anime is done in a very tasteful way to introduce sex to teens & introduce a new perspective of unrequited love to all.
It does a great job at slowly introducing
...
the characters so you don't get overwhelmed.
Unlike most anime, each EP centers on 1-3 character perspectives MAX.
Usually 2.
Although it's a short anime, they've found a way to get you deep into the minds of these teens & adults & understand where they're coming from. Their feelings. Their desires.
It's not one-sided at all.
They do a great (TOO GREAT) job at building up the tragedy & making you more & more frustrated, while addicted at the same time.
Very unique way of telling a tragic love story.
[ART]: 6.7
It's not bad.
It's not fantastic.
I wouldn't call it great either, so I gave it an odd score.
I would consider great, like Kaberni.
(Although a lot of people have mixed feelings on Kabaneri, there's no denying how beautifully done the anime is. It's on a movie level.)
I think it's on the same animation lvl as Ao Haru Ride.
It has its quirks, but it's still your basic level animation.
It's the kind of animation that anime get when the studios don't expect it to be THAT big.
Just one step above those anime where they animate body movement as little as possible. Those anime (not this one) are the ones that are mainly for Otome or game fans, not so much others.
THE OPENING and ENDING... are SO interesting.
It's so weird! It's based off of ink blots & basically forms vaginas lmao
The first time you watch it makes you really mesmerized xD
[SOUND]: 6.5
It's very fitting to the situations.
Not bad at all.
It's fine, but I'm not about to give it a higher score if it's not fantastic lol
[CHAR]: ??
I have no idea how to rate the characters lmfao
I don't hate them, but I don't like them like that?? Not fond of anyone.
I just feel sorry for them all xD
They're all living tragic lives in their own way.
No matter how bitchy a character might be, the way they have to live with their unrequited love or the way that they are is just tragic lol
[ENJOYMENT]: 9
You know what I'm gonna give it a 9 because this is a really unique anime & I'm SICK of what modern anime has turned into.
[OVERALL]: 8
Modern anime, for the most part, is just copycat trash. And I'm not saying that as an OG Anime fan either.
It's the literal truth.
I can't think of a single anime rn that loves to add on this much love tragedy in such a tasteful way as this one does lol
It's not smut, but I wouldn't openly watch this with my parents around.
It's a mid-way point between smut & normal anime.
Smormal lol
BUT YEAH.
ENJOYING IT SO FAR (still watching as I write this review).
WOULD PROBS LOVE THE MANGA.
10/10 WOULD RECOMMEND GIVING IT A TRY.
Watch 2 EPs before you think about whether or not to continue.

ももへのてがみ is follows a girl who moves to the seaside with her mother after the death of her father.
Shortly after her arrival, she meets 3 strange gods that were sent as guardians to watch over her & her mother.
[STORY]: 7
It's an lively story with an interesting take on gods & spirits.
My problem with this story is that the comedic take on it is a little TOO comedic. There are ways to make a story lighthearted & funny without making is outrageous & I just think it was a little too much.
I'll explain more in the characters section.
The story is WAY too predictable & it's a
...
little annoying how I was able to predict everything.
It's cliche & overall, the story just does TOO much in a bad way in many areas.
[ART]: 8
I quite enjoyed the art. It's not fantastic, but the characters were well drawn & very animated--as in very alive with their movement.
Could've done better with the scenery though. It wasn't bad, but it was just eh.
[SOUND]: 9
I don't know what else to say except for the fact that I liked it.
It fits.
That's all I have to say about that lol
[CHARACTERS]: 6
Momo:
Typical annoying brat.
The only thing I enjoyed was her realistic reactions to the guardians sent to look after her. She had good character development, I guess.
At least she didn't just stay the same.
Side-characters:
Could've done more with them. They lacked purpose. Most of the time I was wondering "Why are you even here?"
They SORT OF were useful in developing the family, but eh. Not really.
Guardians:
I hate them. My GOOOOSH, do I hate them.
I was sort of fond of the little guy, but the other 2 just annoyed me.
[ENJOYMENT]: 7
It wasn't BAD, but it wasn't excellent. It was just 'good'.
As I've said multiple times before, it could've done better.
[OVERALL]: 7
I don't think you'll hate it if you watched it, but don't jump into this expecting to love it or be super fond of it after you're done.
I'm really picky with how I like my stories & characters, so I don't think most people will dislike a lot of the characters as much as I did lol
