this was absolutely terrible. shame, because the premise is intresting, but thats about all it had going for it.
art
its the bare minimum really, its a very generic anime art style trying to be creepy, which means it just loops back round to being funny because the horror looks so forced. theres pretty bad same face syndrome too. all the fat guys have the same face shape, all the cute girls, etc. i'd be happy enough to overlook this if the writing was good, but alas.
also, this felt like a massive case of the author's poorly disgusised fetish, lots of foot licking and the characters getting
...
aroused at real bad stinks and that. surprised there wasnt fart sniffing in here. that brings to the sexualisation. its rampant, the whole manga has a latent horniness that just really doesn't fit - the main guy getting boners at stinky people is like. gross but whatever i can see how the author thought that'd fit with the story and his personality. but the way all the women are drawn with their tits being emphasised, and the amount of gratious nudity that is just jarring when put next to the plot. also like half of them are teenagers too like c'mon dude. like there is a lot of nudity in this story for some reason - i'm not the kind of person that thinks books should have only plot relevant nudity, but here it just distracted from everything and felt like the writer was drawing one-handed.
plot & writing
it starts off alright, again the premise and initial idea is really intresting, but it fails to execute. the 1st half was for sure better, it just focused on the two protaganists and the fucked up situtation. what bugged me really was the charactarsation, or like, how shoehorned the themes/ideas were. the protag is an incel, but hes written so cartonnishly evil its hard to take him seriously. everyone speaks like really overblown cartoon characters, but the tone of the art indicates it wants to take itself seriously. as a comparasion, i watched the horror movie jennifers body last night - thats got wacky as hell dialogoue, but its aware of how camp it is and takes itself as seriously as it needs to, which meant i could actually be invested in the movie and a) enjoy it b) engage with the themes/what its trying to say (female friendship, rape revenge, etc). also halfway through he starts acting like a hero like what. it felt completely out of nowehere. right at the end he does a ken kaneki thing where he turns part demon and gets a black eye and starts needing human flesh 😭😭😭 like huh??? 😭
it also tries to do romance in here and it felt like it came out of nowhere. as an aside, it felt very stiff/awkward whenever they said something like so and so is the biggest loser, im thinking something got lost in translation? because its really unnatural sounding dialogoue and everyone speaks like in the story.
theres also the story trying to convince you that he was a good person along, despite him obbssessing over a dead child and sniffing her? panties (or atleast, using someones else pants in her place) repeatedly throughout the story. like hes a piece of shit, and the story is too afraid to actually have that for a main character.
don't read it unless you paid a fiver for it like i did, and even then just read anything else thats good
if you want a died and came back wrong story just read the night hikaru died, it has a coherent plot, good pacing, and actually well written characters.
