Akatsuki no Yona is a less intense version of Basara. Both follow similar themes of romance, royalty, strong female lead, adventure, overcoming adversity, personal growth, destiny, politics, etc... Basara explores these themes in a much more mature manner with greater depth of detail sometimes pushing the boundaries which may make some readers more uncomfortable. I personally love this series but I would not recommend it to high school readers. On the other hand, Akatsuki no yona is perfect for the young at heart. It takes a lighter, more playful approach to similar themes. Akatsuki no Yona has better art than Basara as well as this is newer. The downside of Akatsuki no Yona is that it's not yet complete which sometimes leads to painful times waiting for updates :P

Both Miyazaki films will take you to a magical world. Both films are masterpieces in my mind that features (a) a beautiful fantasy world, (b) amazing character building - watch the characters grow and mature and learn about themselves as they embark on their adventure, and (c) a great story -- Both stories are wonderful deep adventures that will leave you craving to learn more about the world and the characters. I'm impressed by how much both movies are able to capture in under 2 hours. i watched spirited away when I was 10 years old and it's remained my favorite animated film throughout my childhood and well into my adult life. I watched howl's moving castle more recently, but it brought back similar emotions of curiosity and amazement as the story unraveled.

Both stories have deep character development as well as elements of politics, war, romance, strong female lead, enchanting fantasy world, and extremely addicting story-line. I felt withdrawal after reading both of these. They're so similar, yet different if you loved one, you'll be sure to love the other. I think Basara is a bit darker and more complex than Red river/Anatolia story. I truly loved both. I hope you do too!
