I marked my review as spoiler even though I am not going to go too in depth about the plot, so feel free to read. The reason I am not giving this show as high as a review is not because I didn't like it, it was just an average experience. The show had a small amount of action mixed in which was enjoyable, especially whenever it regarded our main character Rishe.
I liked Rishe quite a bit! I do and don't agree with people referring to her as a "Mary Sue" type character because she is while at the same time she isn't. What makes
...
her stand out from other "I am good at everything" characters is the fact she worked hard to become good. Rishe wasn't automatically talented, she had to learn and reform her talents over a period of time. She didn't just practice for a month and became good, she dedicated 5 years of her life each time before she inevitably died. In my honest opinion that makes her so much more enjoyable and it is satisfactory whenever she does outsmart the people around her, because she actually dedicated time to the topics she knows a lot about.
Now for our male lead I have very mixed opinions on him. The show does try to get us to understand him and make us, the viewers, realize he isn't as bad as he seems. He might start a war which over and over kills our main character Rishe, but it's obvious he has circumstances for doing what he did. The show did not cover much when it came to ML backstory, it really only scratched the surface, so with that in mind I have a loose opinion which is open to change. As he is presented to us in the anime alone, I really just don't like him. I know he has a backstory but in all honesty I am not too sure I care about it, at all. His character is not one I want to learn about just based from his portrayal in the anime. How he presents as a character just full of self loathing and then proceeds to take it out on those around him, it just frustrates me, and doesn't leave me interested in him at all.
SPEAKING ABOUT THE PLOT HERE, PLEASE DON'T READ FOR SPOILERS:
Towards the end of the series I began to grow annoyed by him, especially when he snapped at Rishe for the ring. The constant "I don't deserve you, I might kill you" was repetitive and in all honesty wasn't done in a good way, at all. I've read/watched stories which have a ML like that with that self loathing personality and I know it can be done well, Prince Arnold is not a good example of that character type. I also don't like how Rishe was allowing the behavior. I keep using the ring scene where Rishe wanted to show Arnold the ring as an example because that scene really made me mark the show down a point. Rishe is portrayed as a strong character, and while I know that her resolve changed from being a character who wants to be "lazy" and live a long life in this specific life, to wanting to prevent the war and help Arnold in any way she can, I do think it was out of character for her to allow the prince to speak down to her in that way. I'm sure it isn't like that in the light novels which is why I am not going in too hard on the series but it seems quite hypocritical to me.. Regardless, I do believe the show was enjoyable overall. It was cute and I enjoyed the slow romance, even if the ending was left extremely open ended. I will go back to watch season 2 if there ever is one, and I will regard the show with positivity overall!
