Akatsuki No Yona is an epic tale of a kingdom far away (somewhat reminiscent of China). It involves a bigger picture but centers around a few core characters. Most episodes are spent introducing a character and their life and motivations. I enjoy the story, the setting, the art, the music. The villains are also well done, you love and hate them at the same time. The main villain is introduced in the first episode, so it doesn't feel disruptive when there are scenes centered on what the "evil" side is doing.

The continuation of Hitsugi No Chaika...continues Hitsugi no Chaika. It doesn't improve upon it, it isn't a lot worse than the original, it just...continues.
Differences from the first season: The pacing of the story events is faster and the focus has partially shifted away from Tohru as the main character. Similarities: Half of the episodes leading in to the climax have no point. The plot and characters don't really develop at all. Well, a couple of the side characters developed a bit this season, just none of the main three. The anime makes up for all this by having an intriguing premise and interesting world building or ... Suprisingly good.
As a girl, the overdone harem vibe didn't do much for me and there were times in the beginning that I found Chaika annoying. The characters are not particularly deep, they are a bit like stereotypes, and some episodes seem to have no point or impact on the story. Despite all that, by the end I was reluctantly impressed. The world-building was admirably done. It's taken the stereotype of a fantasy kingdom and inverted it. The princess carries a coffin and causes trouble, the unicorns are wild and dangerous beasts, and the system of magic is - like our modern fossil fuels - based ... |
